The young bloke was told that the chassis number was "not on their system'. They also couldn't track it from the old rego number.
I'm aware that plates get re-issued unless you specify you want to 'hold them'. I have a personalised plate on hold but there is every possibility they could re-issue it.

    Anyway, problem now resolved !
My son went to the Frankston VicRoads, presented the paperwork as before without saying anything. The lady said "no problem, I've found it on our system" !!!!! She even found details of the old rego number linked to the chassis number.

Apparently my son commented "WTF" and explained what had happened, she had no idea why Dandenong couldn't find it.
My contact that had contacted VicRoads Engineering commented that maybe.... something was done by the Engineer to make it easier to find on their system ?

I have a number of motorcycles I shipped over from the UK years ago, I applied in advance for approval that they could be registered in Australia. I better get up in the loft and look for the paperwork !

A quick google and it's an odd situation with VicRoads.

VicRoads was partially privatised in 2022 through a 40-year joint venture with a consortium of Aware Super, Australian Retirement Trust, and Macquarie Asset Management, which took over motor vehicle registration, licensing, and custom number plate services. The Victorian Government retains ownership of VicRoads and continues to oversee regulation, policy, road safety, and data, while the joint venture manages the customer-facing services and invests in IT modernization. The deal generated $7.9 billion in upfront payments for the state to invest in the Victorian Future Fund

Don't think that's correct, Colin. Unless they've altered it, (and who knows? )you purchase the plates and they are yours. Doesn't stop them for charging you, though. My personalised plates have never been on anything other than my D2. It was unregistered for a few years. When I re-registered it I put the plates back on. They were on every b it of paperwork associated with the car. Nope, $90 thank you very much. Just for a keystroke, and they didn't even have to issue new plates. Scam.

Speaking of what the US calls "vanity plates", there's a pair on MP... $220,000. !!!!!!

Again, Vicroads does not generate anything.

Glad you got things sorted Colin. I'm worried now about how I'm going to go when it comes time to register my Fiat. Probably close to 30 years since it's been on the road. Probably be another 30 before I finish it though.

Had a few other things on my mind. So it's a Bambino. Don't have any bits for one of those. But now I remember, I suggested a shop for parts once before. Silly me.
