A few years ago I bought a set of 7.00 x 16 12 PR tyres for my S1 LWB from my local tyre dealer ( Right in picture). The compound is fairly soft and not really suitable or recommended for road use.
The side walls are so stiff that I can deflate them to 9 lbs before they start to show any sign of bulging.
We went on a short trip of about 2000 km. First inland from south of Brisbane, then up to Cania Gorge,, from there to Kroombit Tops via the steep eastern slope. After a night of heavy rain,
that involved walking the more than 20 creek crossings first. A few days camping, then a few more days around Agnes Waters and 1770. Then back, a bit inland via Mingo Crossing,
down the road and joined the highway about 10 km north of Gympie, then home. After this short trip of about 2000 km, a lot of it on sealed roads, the tyres showed a noticeable amount
of wear. These are very aggressive off road tyres. They may still be available, ....at an eye watering price.

Thanks for the lead B.S.F. Nothing on their website though and the 7.00x16 page hasn't been updated since September 2022. So like everywhere else the 7.00's seem to be discontinued.Quote:

Interesting notes on the Deestones, he said to be careful as 20 years ago he has seen some of them almost unable to be balanced. Maybe that has changed he said or maybe that is the reason they aren't being imported much anymore.
I've just read through this thread, and I have a couple questions..
Why the fascination with 7.00/16 instead of 7.50?
From memory 7.50/16 was what they all came with, or at least ended up with.
And secondly, we have run all sorts of tyres, and haven't really found the skinny retro tyres any better for failure.
Maybe the MTR, but that's for the pro shooters. For me the trade off with performance and inconvenience isn't worth it.
Of course it's your car and you can fit what you like!

Most Series Landrovers came with 6.00x16 tyres on the swb, and 7.50x16 on the lwb (except 7.00x16 on Series 1 lwb). Options included 7.00x16 and 7.50x16 on swbs.Quote:

The speedometer fitted assumed these standard tyre sizes, and the larger tyre sizes strictly require the speedo to be replaced with the correct one.
In my experience, having driven Series Landrovers for over sixty years, there is little advantage in larger than standard tyres, except for the slightly better ground clearance and higher gearing, at the expense of heavier steering and poorer turning circle.

They are a pretty ordinary drive with those tyres fitted with their "inverse" front springs, we changed to 15s pretty quickly as we found it almost undriveable on our rough tracks..
Yes, Hiluxs came for years with 7.50x16 tyres, and the practice of swapping tyres on near new different tyres ensured a steady supply of cheap tyres for Landrover owners, usually complete with wheels. (Which explains why I have a few Toyota wheels here...)
I never bothered to investigate why it was so popular!
