You are probably better off shipping one from pommy land with you. Lots more toys over in the UK for them and at better prices. Otherwise use the web as Landy's are a specialty item here and most people don't apreciate them.
Hi everyone
We will be arriving in Brisbanesome time in the next 3 months after 10 years in pomland. We will be staying in self catering for 8 weeks while our container is shipped. (Lots of time to 4X4)
I intend buying a Classic RR/Discovery/Fender costing in the region of $10000?soon after arriving.
I would appreciate any comments/advice humourous or otherwise about what to expect for my budget & what the procedure is for buying a vehicle in QLD - RWC/Tax/insurance etc.
Thanks
Rory

Hi Rory,
IME the best option is to buy privately or through an auction, it is a little bit more work but you will save money.
For 10k you should be able to get an early 300Tdi defender or 200Tdi. Australia didn't get many 200tdi defenders and almost all were utilities.
V8 discoveries are usually cheaper than tdis, so you could get a later model V8 than a tdi. Personally I prefer diesels, but the government is introducing an LPG rebate which may make a V8 as economical to run as a diesel (or even moreso).
Someone else will have to give you info on range rover pricing... Stay away from VM turbo diesels!!!
If you buy a registered (road taxed) vehicle privately, the seller is required by QLD law to obtain a "safety certificate" (MOT) for the vehicle before they sell it. They should also give you a completed change of ownership document.
You need to take the vehicle to a queensland transport office, with:
Safety certificate
Change of ownership certificate
CTP (Compulsory Third Party) Insurance certificate - you need to obtain this from an insurance company licenced to issue CTP insurance (most major insurance companies).
You have to pay registration fees, (based on number of cylinders the engine has), and stamp duty on the purchase price.
Have a look at http://www.autotrader.com.au for private car sales.
If you buy a vehicle from auction:
http://www.fowles.com.au/
http://www.pickles.com.au/
Usually the vehicles are sold unregistered, and often without a safety certificate. You need to obtain your own safety cert. from a mechanic licenced to carry out the inspections, for a cost of about $50.
You are legally allowed to drive the vehicle unregistered, but only directly from the place of purchase to the safety cert. inspection, then to the transport department for registration. Before you do this you need to have a CTP certificate and a completed registration form.

It is the Queensland Government site. We have an election this weekend but I don't expect much to change as the opposition seems more confused than the present Government![]()

From what I have seen, 2nd hand Landies are a lot more expensive in the UK than in OZ, and UK models are often much rustier. The only advantage is the UK got a lot of models we didn't.Originally Posted by George130
