    100 series Landcruiser IFS failures

    A mate of mine just bought a 100 series Landcruiser. I want to give him a bit of a stirr.

    Can anyone direct me to a link preferabily a picture of the front wheel broken off and on the ground of the Landcruiser.

    Saw this photo somewhere before but can't find it now. Could have been in an old Overlander mag.

    My brother has a 04 model - the front springs started to sag after 18 months of just highway use - the car has never been offroad.

    Sorry, no pics, but both my Dad and my brother have 100 Series TD Land Cruisers. No failures on theirs yet, but they both have the lower control arm strengthening bracket in place. I have replaced a suspension upright in the front of one, severely bent after hitting a washout.

    There have been a couple of letter written to overlander about this, one of them had a photo, i am pretty sure it was overlander but it may have been 4x4 Austrlia, i was getting all 3 mags for a while, they are all buried in the bottom of a box otherwise i would get them out. Matt

    Sorry its not a 100 series, but a Prado that **** a front ball joint, then went all wobbily.

    Was quite funny this F/wit indian was driving it trying to show how he could get up a dune that no one else could, even a couple of trick jeep wranglers with 35s, front and rear lockers etc could`nt do it, so this indian ploughs into this dune at somewhere around 60ks, there is a loud pop heard by everyone, to his credit he did make the climb on momentum alone, then on the decent, this was the result, just at the base the wheel kicked off sending the Prado to turn 90 degrees, luckily it did`nt happen in the middle of the decent as it probably would have rolled turning at 90 deg to the face with a bit of speed coming down.

    Funny thing was no one had any sympathy for this bloke, but at least he was given to ph no of the recovery company and way point to direct em to.

    4WD Monthly says...

    Opened this month's 4WDM when it arrived this arvo and there's an article on buying used 100 Series. I quote:

    "The problem lies on the lower right-hand side arm in the weld between the upper and lower and lower halves. Some models were produced with an insufficient length of weld and can crack under severe (read off-road) use."

    But sorry, no pics. It's on page 100 - easy to remember.

    Overlander ran an article on this exact subject in the July '06 issue. The problem is that the lower part of the control arm is weak and when it hits the bumpstops too often it will crack. The solution is a bracket that is welded to the arm, reinforcing it. At the same time it is wise to upgrade the springs and shocks so there is less bottoming out. Third part of the fix is to lower the front diff, so the increased height at the front doesn't increase the CV joint angle.

    It's a common problem with LC100s. You can tell it's a common problem when a company goes to the effort of designing and marketing a kit to fix it!
