Hmm... interesting notion. You may be on to something here.

    Allianz or Alliance?

TCIS used to be underwritten by CGU. When they changed to CGU, my comprehensive policy went from about $450 to $1500 for lesser value. I changed to AAMI for $537 (at that time).

Sorry, it is Allianz. I thought TCIS used them earlier on but being a broker I guess they change every now and again. I thought Shannons use Allianz too.

Wayne, thanks for suggesting Alliance, good point and I will inquire.

Dave, thanks for pointing to Shannons, will try. A great big thank you for the invite too! Im not very good with Aussie geography -yet. Where are you located? And could you please give us a telephone number? Are you OK with SMS, as for us it will be the most convenient way to liaise with you once we get closer to where you are.

Will let you know how things evolve on the insurance front and... might get back with a new set of questions once we get into the details of premiums and what they cover.

    Cheers and thanks again

OK... I went through all of this when I brought my 110 into Oz last year.

The long & the short of it is that unless you happen to stumble onto a specialist, you're not going to get fully comp cover for your vehicle in Oz.

However... Things aren't all doom & gloom.

Despite the comment earlier in the thread, you CAN bring a foreign registered vehicle into Oz & use it on the roads, without having to go through a full registration process for up to 12 mths. I was happily driving my UK registered 110 around for 6mths without problems...(even the QLD cops gave my paperwork a clean bill of health when they stopped me).

Once through customs & quarantine, the only thing you have to do is get the vehicle registered at your local registration office (I landed in Melbourne so I went to a Vic roads office), pay a fee to get your TAC (Temportary Accident & Collision.. or something..) cover and off you go. That TAC cover is essentially the same cover that everyone in Oz has as part of the annual registration renewal and gives you the 3rd party cover.

If you have any more questions, feel free to drop me a PM.

it seems we found a solution

We got turned down by Shannons and Allianz and Lumley etc etc etc...
Found a broker specialised on tourists, but would only do 1/3 party for the price what one would reasonably expect for comprehensive coverage. And we did not like the excess at all...

It seems that we found a way of insuring our vehicle comprehensive, glass break, fire, theft and all for a decent price. I would tell you how if I was not afraid of you all making fun of our poor Alistair...

All, right, if you must know: Alistair from now on will be a....

    campervan

All we need to do is register

oops, rest of the story re insurance

all we need to do is register with this campervan association and they will fully cover us for 534 AUD with basic excess of 200 and 2000 excess for theft of inside equipment. The beauty of it is that this will even cover us the next next ocean leg of our trip.

And they accepted to waive the need to prove our no claim bonus status. I guess they did not want to deal with the Arabic statements they would have got from our recent insurance companies in Jordan, Saudi, Emirates and Oman...

So it looks like we won't have to sell Alistair to Chris Omaroo after all...
DirtyDawg, I liked your creative approach though, and I will make sure I put the next admin hurdle we encounterr to the test of your out-of-the-box lateral thinking!

Thanks again to you all for your suggestions and most of all for your support.
Thanks to you all, we do not feel all alone anymore fighting the admin difficulty of getting organised for our Aussie adventure.

I'll put a update post shortly to let you know how we are getting on.

    Cheers
    Martine
