That's a bloody shame. Although I am sure that they all know the risks, it'd still feel to close to home for a lot of the drivers with what's been happening of late.

Below is the media statement from the family:

"With untold sadness the family of Mark Porter advises that Mark has passed away.

The family wishes to convey their heartfelt appreciation for the efforts of the medical crews who have been involved all the way through – at the track, at the Bathurst Base Hospital and at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and all of those who transported Mark between those facilities. They gave Mark every chance at life, for which we thank them.

The family also expresses their appreciation of the efforts of the officials of V8 Supercars Australia, all of whom have done their utmost to support all those involved in this tragedy.

The family conveys their best wishes to David Clark and those close to him and wishes him a complete recovery.

The Porter family also passes on their sincerest thanks to all of those who have conveyed to us their best wishes and prayers since Friday afternoon.

The family asks that the media respect the privacy of our family at this very emotionally stressful time."

Paul Radisich, according to this mornings news has a broken ankle (Grant Denyer on Sunrise) but is otherwise OK - he was flown to Sydney for some spinal scans that they couldn't do at Bathurst as a precautionary measure.

Very sad and my sympathies go to his family.
Like said the cars did not appear to have extensive damage, but it is not that that causes the injuries, it is the sudden deceleration or acceleration/deceleration impact of the internal body organs.
Not a good place to park your car at the top of the mountain.
Lowndse's roll over at Aran Park I think, was a completely different accident as there was an impact, but no immediate sudden deceleration.

I must admit that I had no idea who Mark Porter was until I began reading the thread.

Whilst it is indeed a awful for his family, I really don't understand why the media call it a tragedy. Don't they know what tragedy means?

    tragedy

noun (pl. tragedies) 1 an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress.

Exactly. The death of a loved one causes GREAT distress. Ergo it is a TRAGEDY.

    Sorry, not convinced, Vlad.

Not everyone loved him, most people would only know the name, not the person so how can it be a tragedy to them?

To me, it is nothing to be upset over. I had never heard of him.

Tragedy is also a term relating to loss of life:

A disastrous event, especially one involving distressing loss or injury to life: an expedition that ended in tragedy, with all hands lost at sea.
I'd call any sudden and unexpected loss of life a tragedy.
    Cheers

Certainly a weekend of mixed feelings/emotions.
Congrats to Ford and Loundsy ( go the Fords)

Sympathy to the Porter family. A sad day for all concerned.
