Use of handbrake on downhill

ok i didn't read every post, i have never used my handbrake on a descent

question, is it possible for the heat build up to damage the t-case output seal which than would render the handbrake useless, this question is mainly for touring when you are in the middle of no where with out a hand brake

mine got a workout that day and have had no issues or leaks...

In most torque converters the lockup plate is not designed to cope with massively different plate RPM's...

though I think the problem is the higher idle speed of the auto,,,

I'll get the good oil from him tomorrow, with the big pictures, drawn in crayon on the chewproof kiddie cardboard.

instead of adding to this thread I'll whack it up as a new one under auto trans or something similar.

Ok last w/e.....
.... we did pole-to-pole up at the watagans
.... I was the 4th cab off the ranks.... steep little rocky friggin track... dry as a bone

everyones calling out .... slow down slow down !!!!!

so I hit the foot brakes... easy... easy again and it stalls

same again.... stalls again

I'm thinking WTF.... it's supposed to be off-the-brakes-just-let-it-down-in-low-first-its-a-diesel-no-worries

anyway, so then someone said 'use the hand-brake'

I did and it was much more controlled..... engine still had revs..... but now much slower

so who knows.... worked for me.... but then I'm a begginer

It wasn't an average trip, & it wasn't an average hill :eek:

So normal engine braking isn't enough. You need to help the vehicle.

At LROC driver training, we do suggest turning the air con on, & pulling the handbrake a couple of notches, before you start if its a big one. If it starts to run away still, pump the brakes. Manual ABS. That will control the car, while allowing the wheels to turn.

It sounds as though you kept your foot on the pedal, causing a stall. Not a good idea, you might induce a lockup & slide. Pumpinn is much better, & easy to do. Adrenalin make you pump faster! :woot:
