    Day trip close to Melbourne

Anyone got any suggestions for a good day trip close to Melb.? I was after medium standard as I just want a bit of fun & not a lot of work. With the rain we have just had it should make tracks a little more enjoyable Any ideas greatly appreciated.

You could try the Warburton area, but alot of it has been bulldozed. There are still some good tracks though. Try Cemetry Hill, Britannia Range. Dont attempt Cummings spur unless your in for alot of damage.

Or the Toolangi/Narbethong area is always good. Many tracks of all standars to be found here. Some are closed atm. Check the parks website.

Or Mt Dissapointment area. Cant comment on it though. Havent been there.

Or a little further afeild, the Walhalla area is great. Around 2.5 hours from Melbourne. Alot of interesting things around to look at as well as lots of challenging tracks.

Also check out the trips and tracks section for past trip reports etc.

I agree with all those locations suggested by Mick. Plenty of choice really - we are lucky here in Victoria that many of the areas are still available. Good choice of easy, medium tracks too.
Toolangi/Murunndindi or even up around Kinglake, or maybe the Wombat State Forest.
Or go through Marysville/Warburton down into the Big River and maybe up to Mt. Terrible.
Out East there's Bunyip State Park, although a lot of tracks have been closed permanently there.
There are a couple of books around on 4WD trips close to Melbourne- I have one put out by Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage and I saw another one at the RACV shop the other day.
The best maps are probably the Rooftop series - they tend to be fairly accurate and have lots of notes about the tracks etc.

Head straight north to kinglake/toolangi/ murindindi easy drive from east/north burbs an daslo not too far to drive back home. If you are taking family/kids, then a nice scenic drive is to the Mt St Leonards fire lookout.

From Ashwood you'd get a good run (about 1 hour) to Bunyip State Forest at Gembrook. They are some easy touring tracks and steeper / rougher branches coming off these. As you head out of Gembrook toward the forest, you will come to a Rangers (DSE) station on the left (edge of town). They have a info box at the front with free maps.

Yep, I do miss the 4wding in Vic

Living in QLD we are becoming a bit less blessed with choice although we have plenty of 4WD parks to choose from (need to pay though which is fair enough). As good as they are, it's not the same as just going there to explore really IMO.
