    Transporting D2 to Holiday Destination

I had this cunning plan... and like all cunning plans... its gone to pieces

I have the travelling bug bad and i really want to visit more of Aust, the trouble is both my partner and i both work and we have 3 kids at home age 14, 3, & 1. which pretty much rules out any extended lengthy trips.

(I will get to the point soon...just keep reading)

We did the east coast as far as Brisbane 18 months ago and im itching to keep going, doing Brissy up or WA.

(Now we get to the cunning plan part)

So my thought was why not load the LR up, throw it on a train and travel to our starting destination.

This is where it all fell apart, looking at the Great Southern Railway website, firstly the D2 is to tall for some trips and secondly the cost, Europe would be cheaper!

So next i looked at trucking the LR and flying up $872 quote each way to Brissy from Moving Cars Trouble is they wont move a vehicle unless its completely empty of personal effects

There must be a way of doing this?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Plenty of people have done this, I'm not sure on cost.
I think Slunnie or someone down south, did FNQ/the Cape and the Disco was trucked up.

It is quite common, someone here will know for sure.

Matt, this is a stab in the dark but perhaps you can pay someone to drive the car there and back. Just a thought ...

Yeah gave this a thought too, until i did some quick maths... approx 3000kms on the LR and 600ltrs of fuel and i decided to give it a miss

prehaps you could swap for holidays with a member in the location your going to and they use your vehicle. That way vehicles used closer to destination for both parties no travel costs other than airfares between cities

I would contact a few smaller trucking companies and find out about getting it backloaded on an empty semi.
Worth a try.People from here may be able to give you company contacts in the destinations you seek???

I have done that. Trucked Sydney to Cairns and then after the holidays returned back to Sydney.

I'm not sure of the specifics though, Aloa may be able to better inform as he did the organisation for it. I think it workd out to $2300 return trucking with 3 4WD's. So basically we booked the truck. 1 on the truck, 2 on the trailer.
    Cheers

I did it the other way 18 months ago. Trucked the Disco to Melb from Bris for about $550. Flew all five of us to Melb for about $700. Picked up a few days and didn't cost much more than driving it.

    Drive budget est:
    Fuel: $400
    Food: $250
    Accom: $250
Wear and tear and 'are we there yet' factor: $ millions

But like you said, the vehicle must be empty. Which didn't worry us, we camped in cheap motels (and some were quite good), and did a supermarket raid in Melb for all the general and snacky stuff.

It was a good way to go and I'd do it again.

We sold a rim to some people a few months ago who were driving a mates Disco II and camper to the Kimberly for a holiday. They were then going to fly home and the owner fly up to do the same trip in reverse. Two holidays for the price of one!

I think the hard bit would be letting someone else be responsible for your pride and joy. I don't think I could do it.

I dunno but im not really comfortable doing the vehicle swap thing.

In reality its really going to be cheaper just hiring a car, but not as much fun
