we had some street wires short out during a storm from the wind.......
along with a bit of help from some lightning......


we later found out we could have claimed some damages from the electricity company......
it might be worth making a few phone calls......
sure...they cant control the weather.....but they can install some sort of protection for the end users......
its not your fault their system damaged your goods.......

ps.....nature is a mother!!.....

At least no one was hurt.
Had a friend 10 years ago trying to get the dogs inside during a bad storm. Lightnin struck the power lines while he was holding a brass lamp.
2 TV's
VCR
Fridge
Computer Microwave fried.
He was thrown across the room and acrually crackde the lamp where he was holding it. He was lucky to only have burns to his hand.

Hope the power company idea helps you out.

Depending on where you live, there is a good chance you can make a claim on the distribution company that owns the grid in your neck of the woods.

If you go through the retailer you might be waiting a very long time.

My company pays about $4M Aud a year for this sort of thing on a fairly small customer base. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose.

Everyone that i know that has had surges due to lightning have not been covered by their insurance as they consider it an act of god - ie not covered. You can try but if its lightning it isnt caused by the power company ?

PS, For Pedro's benefit its worth going to the distribution company. If your in Energex Distro area they certainly pay for consumer claims in some instances.

i have seen a good quality one take an almost direct hit from lightning, have its outer case completely blown off it, and the computer behind it still function when the power came back on.. the lightning hit the outer metal wall on the bus managers office... there wasnt a lot left, but the computer still worked... i have the same surge units fitted in just about every socket in my house, oddly enough :P
