The Only thing we are lacking now, is the question
Mr Sav I have PMed you. The question was to do with finding an HF radio that will do both Ham bands and VKS737.

130's rule
yep, most HF ham radios should be able to do the VKS737 I would say.
in my defender I am running a yaesu FT 857 and it works for the VKS737, too.
I got ham radio gear because it is more versatile than the channelized HF rigs; I had to learn how to operate it though. I think that is basically the only disadvantage that you have to know what you are doing.
the VKS737 people dont like you using ham radio gear though. it is a longwinded discussion why not and they are using technical arguments ( drifting frequencies etc) to make their case.
I personally found that when I started doing more research on those arguments they did not hold up very long ...
in the end I think the entire discussion boils down to the question if you want a fool proved rig (in an emergency everybody can handle it) or if you can do with a radio which has a certain amount of parameters which you have to get right.
the ham radio gear is much much cheaper and more versatile I would say.
hope that helps, cheers, axel
I have a Kenwood TS50s in the Rangie. It is capable of transmitting on all frequencies up to 30 meg with the appropriate mod and antenna. I have an LDG auto-tuner under the passenger seat. You are not allowed to transmit on commercial frequencies with amateur equipment (VKS etc) however I do not use the radio for general chat and it is there for an emergency only as I often travel on my own. Before I bought the radio a local ham retailer told me there were probably more amateur radios used on the VKS network than anything else (that was around 10 years ago)

Thanks all - just got my foundation license so looking around for a rig now.
