while I (and everyone else on here) would much rather our landys over anything Jap, unless you have the means to maintain a landy yourself (or know someone local who can do it for you at the right price) lets face it a landy is not the car for you
(truth is I have talked a friend (toyjo driver) out of buying one because he is extremely fussy about everything has to work exactly right, doesn't know how to hold a spanner and then complains every time it costs him money to get something fixed) He love my landys (look and ability) but I know if he buys one he'll never stop complaining to me about it.
So unless she's good with the tools (don't laugh a mate of mines daughter is an account and was very good with fixing her own cars, although she now has the $ to pay the stealer to maintain her new Mercedes)
I would suggest a Jap 4wd diesel ute (like you say hilux or similar)
that way she can have the bullbar (wildlife protection) some toughness for dirt roads and a little off road ability and at the same time have a car that needs little more than oil changes and the local mechanic is familiar with
good luck

Seriously ron, if she is heading to WA a defender is going to come off better in an animal strike, and will better cope with the roads, they are drivable in the city, pretty good on fuel, and not a rocket ship so she wont be able to get her self in to much trouble speed wise. Matt

Ron made another spelling mistake - he typed in hilux - the girl wants a Landy!
And when she gets she can join this club.
