    Cool TDI vs V8

There is a well known old saying.... V8 Disco's/Rangies pass anything but a fuel bowser. I love it when I get 800 ks approx out of each tank fill in my old dog TDI Disco. ( excluding towing the camper trailer)

    Cheers

Well Im very happy with my 97 300TDi Auto Disco.....Our last car before the Disco was a VR SS 5L Auto, so I really noted the differance, but Ive gone right over her and now it go's like a train.....only one very smalll oil leak from the rear main seal....well its more of a slow weep more than a leak !

I dont think the Disco you where looking at has been looked after as well as you think....I got a Gregorys workshop manual and went from cover to cover and did almost every service item I could and like I said it now go's much better now....oh and dont forget A DTi is only a 2.5L put a WRX motor in a Disco and Im sure you will still be disapointed.....ie over 2 ton of Disco.....oh and I get almost 900km out of our Slow poke

Yep - absolutely wonderful fuel economy. My best is about 940km from a tank. That was just easy driving to Wagga and back on the highway (no roof rack or trailer).

I've got her loaded for my northern trip now, and I hardly notice the change in performance. The roof rack will make a difference though - aerodynamics of a brick!

From reading all of this I have noticed that pretty much the only benefit of a Tdi is fuel economy. That is something that would be great for long trips. However what you guys REALLY need is a V8 with a fuel card

    (And lots of jerry cans)

Well, that and plenty of torque at low revs and the ability to drive through puddles without stalling....

My first drive of our TDI auto I was nearly cleaned up by oncoming traffic! I wondered how many others had accidents the first time the drove a TDI auto.

However driving style does make a difference. Slowwly depress the go pedal gets you off the line quicker because you don't flood the motor. Also a correctly tuned pump and turbo makes a huge difference. I had mine done by MR automotive and it easily equals a TD5 and who ever thinks a 3.5 has power has never driven a real V8. Noise does not equal power

I've had the same experience behind the wheel of a tdi Disco. I drove a few tdi's and hated them all to be quite honest. I have a turbo diesel transit van for work and it's bloody hopless and ****s me off when I go to take off there's always that delay before we have movement. My V8 Rangie, though no powerhouse, at least something happens when I pushj on the accelerator pedal

As I have stared in the past, I only use my Rangie on club trips, weekend jaunts, etc.. so the fuel economy isn't really an issue for me.
