Go for a 4 litre.

It's smaller and not as powerful, but don't suffer the cylinder liner slippage that the 4.6's do. Plus do you really want all those electrics. I'm a keep it simple bloke and hate **** that goes wrong, especially in the bush

My dad bought a 98 4.0 about 2 year ago and had a few issues primarily with the EAS and the HVAC (heating, ventalation and air conditioning). Personally, I would convert to coil springs if I ever bought a P38 Rangie. I've owned a 93 Rangie with EAS in the past and it was a dead set PIA, converting it to coil springs saved my sanity and it was a teriffic unit after that. I know the later P38's are different in that department, but for $1700 it's much cheaper than ****ing around with EAS

The '98 is the last of the original injection system (if that's what it's called). The next model year came out with the Bosch system that you seem to refer to. It made a big difference to the low down torque/power.

The early P38s are cheap nowadays - they're an awful lot of car for the money but be prepared for high upkeep costs.

I would think it is typical of all late model 4wds. Check some filter prices from Toymota or Nisone.

I agree fully with aquarangie. The only HSE I would buy would be when BMW took over...after 2000 I think. But then thats twice the price of say a 96' model.
Id go a 4.0 if getting an older one. My father bought a 97' in beautiful condition and at 110,000 km's it needed a new motor (10k) due to sleeve problems. 4.6 pre 2000 are a waist of time.

Overall with new motor (and 10k later) its a fantastic 4x4. Drives very well.

I was researching into buying one a few months back and found that the 99 model year onwards are the better pick because they were fitted with the more reliable bosch electrics as Scouse said, i was also told to go for the 4.0L as mentioned above.

There were mixed feelings about the EAS, some hate it, some love it. Steinzy likes the EAS on his, there is a mod that can be done to the computer to get an extra 2in of height, EAS is excellent because it doesnt sag with more weight, you always have the same ride height, but as mentioned above when it fails it is expensive to fix. We know that but there are plenty of others that don't.

Quite often you'd get a new LR owner who has hocked everything to buy their 3-4 YO Range Rover.
The EAS would be down, the A/C would be blowing hot, the heater core O rings are leaking, the brakes are worn - pretty soon they're up for a $5000+ bill.
They just about have a hearty.
