Go for a 4 litre.
It's smaller and not as powerful, but don't suffer the cylinder liner slippage that the 4.6's do.
I agree fully with aquarangie. The only HSE I would buy would be when BMW took over...after 2000 I think. But then thats twice the price of say a 96' model.
Id go a 4.0 if getting an older one. My father bought a 97' in beautiful condition and at 110,000 km's it needed a new motor (10k) due to sleeve problems. 4.6 pre 2000 are a waist of time.
Overall with new motor (and 10k later) its a fantastic 4x4. Drives very well.
