as for parts ,there is always plenty of places to source them from ,new and used ,and if all else fails ,you can always get another one for parts just depends on the size of your backyard,go for it ,they are a pretty simple motor to work on

Hi, parts are readily available, visit www.fourwheeldrives.com.au and request one of their land rover parts catalogues, very extensive book with diagrams, parts lists and prices for everything. Failing that they are easily posted over from the UK. Full engine rebuild kits are available.

Seems like a good buy if you can keep the selling price below $1000. If the overdrive is a fairey overdrive they are worth over a grand on their own in good condition, and will make highway cruising easier. The SWB series landies are great i am in the process of restoring a Series II at the moment (has stagnated at the moment due to insufficient funds).

Have you been to look at the vehicle? If you havent do so, and check for heavy rust around the firewall, if it has heavy rust they are hard to repair and more often than not its easier to find a replacement. Foot wells can also rust out but can be replaced, there are new ones made up in the parts catalogue above. Dont worry to much about bent panels, if they are bad they can be replaced easily, and cheap ones arent hard to find. Check over the vehicle for signs of DIY repairs to the wiring loom, as the vehicles get old the looms can deteriorate, this is fine and cant be avoided but if the owner doesnt know what they were doing they may have created a mine field whilst trying to fix it. Its relatively easy to repair with a wiring diagram, but can be time consuming. Other than the rust and the wiring loom there isnt to much that can become to much of a problem accept the engine which you know has problems anyway. Also check the gear box, is selection hard, easy or somewhere in between, they are old so gears wont go in like a new corrola but it shouldnt be hard, also engage low range, and the hubs and make sure 4wd works properly, transfer cases can be costly to repair if they are totally knackered. Yeah thats the bummer part iam in Brisbane and its in Melbourne, i have a mate that lives down there and is as machinaly minded as a bar of soap but with the info you guys have given should give him a head start My boy Matthew (8 years) is so excited that we are looking at it. Thanks for the info on parts and stuff thats good to know and as for the motor the last engine i worked on was a 1.8 isuzu petrol back in the 80's so i should be rite with a 60's

Depends if you're after an 'original' vehicle or not.

Looks like it's been resprayed at some stage. Tail lights are not original. Rear cross member is a little different to say the least.

Where is the "little" rust they have mentioned? Footwells? Not so bad. Firewall? Could be bad depending on how extensive it is. Chassis? Not as expensive to repair compared to a bad firewall in my opinion.

Has some good extras though.

The price is right even if it is a little rough. What do you intend to use it for. Farm hack or restoration project??

I was actually going to check this one out but have decided against it. It's just not what I'm after.

PPS D110v8 . To say Four Wheel drives parts are rubbish is too great a generalisation. I would'nt buy thier steering tie rods or brake linings, but 90% of what they sell is very competitely priced and good quality.
Their bearings, gasket kits, hoses etc are just fine.
I've spent $1000's there over the years. The only thing I objected to was them sending countless series Landie to Noumea. Gone forever.

It seems to have a number of modifications that will attract problems when you try to register it in Qld, such as the seats, which are definitely non-standard - this is one of the things I understand Queensland is strict on. The rear seat pads are non standard. It has a bumper added to the rear cross member that should not cause any problems unless it is hiding rust. I don't recognise the carburetter, and tha aircleaner setup is non standard. The amount of oil on the engine suggests it has a fair bit of blowby. Don't forget that you have to get it to Qld - and since it is being sold unregistered, this could imply getting it trucked, which could cost as much as you pay for it.

I would definitely take up DeeJay's offer to look at it. Whether it is worthwhile will depend on how much it goes for and what you want to do with it, but as far as I can tell from the pictures it is quite good for its age.

Parts are readily available for this model, Four Wheel Drives is one supplier, they have excellent service, but some parts are poor quality, but are cheaper. There are other suppliers, and in fact most parts can be ordered through dealers, although they tend not to stock them and charge a lot more than the independents do. The engine and the vehicle as a whole are easy to work on, and the swb is a good daily driver, especially with the overdrive, although fuel economy won't win any prizes.

Suspected valve trouble may be because this engine has the valves running on cast iron seats, which are considered unsatisfactory for unleaded petrol. However, this engine does not seem to worry about this unless you are doing a lot of high power operation such as freeway driving. However, you would be well advised to plan on a top overhaul and fitting hardened valve seats. When doing this, it would be worth raising the compression if possible as the engine is almost certainly a 7:1 unless already converted.

The paint job on the engine suggests it is an ex army reconditioned engine.
