    Cherry Venture To Go

Heard on the news this morning that the powers that be (Government or QNPWS) have decicded that whats left of the Cherry Venture poses to much of a hazard to the dimwitts that cant read signs and still insist on climbing through the remains of it so it is to be removed after over 30 years of being an icon of the South East Queensland coast.

Better get up there quick and get some pics of whats left, as I first visited it about 3 months after it was first washed ashore.

This will be the second time they are getting rid of it

The first time they just got rid of the upper decks.

Will be a shame to see it go. Every good 4wd beach has a shipwreck on it.

There was nothing better than an ice block at the Cherry Venture on a hot Summers Day.

Personally I can't wait til they put up the dam wall to stop half wits getting their 4wds drowned when stuck below the high tide mark.

My Mum went and saw it when it first ran aground. In a Land Rover

There is nothing left now anyway, it's a pile of rusted dung, which is a shame.
I remember seeing it as a wee one, it was basically complete.
I remember climbing all over when I wasn't that young either.

Since they crushed it with the excavator, you can't even tell what it is, or was, and is more dangerous now - more good decisions from the Govt. with all fluff and no substance.

    As she was

It's now about one eight of the length, hardly 10ft tall and no recognisable features of a ship at all, just a pile of rusted, twisted metal.

It must have been a ripper of a storm to get a freighter that big that high up the beach.

Was a cyclone in 73, then another one came through the next day I think and got it further. What's left now is about 20m from the dunes

    Apparently 12M + waves and 140km/h + winds

There's not much of it left anyhow, how sad.

Should've been preserved when it washed up and became unrecoverable.
Would've made a great unusual hotel or similar.

I was lucky enough to see it when I was about 16, a few months after it 'arrived'.

Amazing how quickly a beach can form and re form, it was stuck fast within a week or so.

Bets on for another 'cherry venture' before too long...

There must be a joke somewhere about it being Viet, and a precursor of 'boat people' etc.... 'travelling in style, eh'? (I'm not being personal or racist).

Good pic mudguts, I should find mine.

    It's only a memory now.

We passed it about 2 1/2 years ago, not much left then, so much later when we got home I showed the kids the pics I took when I was about 16.

They're uniform question was, apart from how did it get there and why was it not put back in the sea, wa why it was 'let go'... even they could see its value

(Was anyone at Trial Bay around the time the 3 old Sydney ferries washed up during a storm, I remember that one, too - we went lots pf places when we were kids)....
