Exclamation Careful When Adding Extra's ---------

Before I start I'm only a mechanic, nothing to do with Traffic, Roads, Police ect ect ect.
I notice, and I was one of those people, adding "make it yourself" types of gear to my/our beloved vehicles ie 4x4's.
I learnt a very valuable lesson 3mths ago buying a Cargo Barrier, for my 96 TDI Disco (paid $274) from 1 of the 3 BIG 4x4 acc sellers, without saying names.
Took it home went to fit it and noticed it had no COMPLIANCE Tag/stickers, rang up my ins mob (WQBE) told them about my ???? on this Barrier, they said they will still ins my veh, but, if I had an accident and someone or something is hurt/damaged and they can put it back to the Barrier they will "stop" any cover for said veh ie if I brake and something comes through the Barrier a scones someone and there hurt, no ins.
My wife drives my veh, loves it, with my 3 boys (under 14)
Went back to acc seller with my concerns not only did they say they sell alot (due to low cost) but yes it is not compliant and if I had a concern they will refund full $ back with no problems, thanks you very much.
Now I'm not trying to sound like a copper or the fun Police, as stated I would try and make most of my gear before paying big $'s but I think we all need to think, especially these days as we come closer to the USof A "The land of Suing" is it safe for my family and others on the road ie Bullbars, towbars, 2nd batts in the cargo area.
This was only to point out "my" dealings with something I thought was safe, and probably could have been??????, but I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law and I wont take any chances with my kids or anyone else’s in that fact.

    Cheers all

geez mate, take the bullbar out of cargo area!

back on topic, I agree with you - my county is going through a bit of a "de-mod" to take it back to close to 'factory'. I just don't trust the blardy insurance buggers to pay out for something big when the landy is obviously modified

Weiry raises an interesting point. I got my cargo barrier fitted after doing some investigation regarding insurance etc. The result was if the cargo barrier wasn't fitted by an accredited accessory fitter (piece of paper that means nothing) your insurance company can reject a claim.

Having said that I think if you start looking into these things, you will find almost anything fitted to a vehicle or manufactured to a "standard" will come under scrutiny in an accident .. if it is relevant to an injury.

We need to be aware but I reckon just run with it ... life is too short to worry about all this cr@p.

So what happens if you don't have a cargo barrier and in an accident something moved forward and damages someone. Are we covered by insurance?

Yes, if the car is in stock standard form, if it is modified in any way the insurance company may void your claim unless the modifications are carried out by an accredited company and have been engineer certified as safe, then added as a modification to your existing insurance policy at the time of install.

Is insurance going to help when your head is squashed against the windscreen by that toolbox, jack, d shackle, etc that we all seem to carry around?

Totally agree BigJon... just seems a bit strange that if you try and protect yourself with a cargo barrier you get penalised.......
