Sign took out my LH Mirror

Hi all, recently took the family down to Sth Ballina from Brisvegas last weekend. On the way a truck decided to overtake me at the last possible moment as the overtaking lane ended going up the Tintenbar hill going into Ballina. To avoid him i had to drive between him and a sign after the lane ended. Had the trailer on the back loaded up so was a scary moment. I ended up taking out the LH mirror on the sign and narrowly missed his tray on the RH side. I ended up chasing him down and getting him to stop. He wasn't interested in admitting any fault until we had a witness stop and give him a serve too. He then proceeded to tell me if he had slowed down it would have taken him longer to get up the hill.....
It could have been a lot worse. Could have ended up upside down with less family to tell the story. I reckon if i was the swinging type he would have had me up for assault.

I rang his boss on the Monday after the weekend and of course his driver had told him a different story. I had talked to a copper friend of mine over the weekend to see wether it was worth reporting it. He reckons 99% of police would tell me to go through insurance.......the other 1% would need me to supply a statement (couple of hours out of my camping weekend), the witness would need to go in and provide a statement, the driver would be interviewed. Then it might go to court and we all would have to show up.

I haven't rang around yet to get a price to replace the mirror. Anyone have a price for one off hand ??? Its a 2003 TD5 D2

Just bought a replacement mirror head from Four Wheel Drives in Blackburn for $59 for the County. The arm was extra but I didn't need it. Not sure if it is the same for a Disco

Sorry to hear about the mirror, tonto.

Not too many brown undies with the family, I hope.

I'm sure you'll find one for the right price.

Please report this incident as there is much lobbying in our area about roads etc. The local blokes are compiling stats about such issues.

Take the coast road next time, via Byron Bay, Lennox Head and to Ballina.

Where on Tintenbar Hill did this happen?

Leaving Ballina and heading north the climb (up Tbatr Hill) is apparently the steepest on the Pac Hwy.

(and if you're heading this way, say g'day, we're often on the beach, it's a real beauty when you get the tides right)

    Cheers, GQ

Tont - good on you for pulling him over and giving him a piece of your mind. There are quite a few truckies around my way (there's a sandstone Quarry nearby) that seem to have forgotten there are people inside those cars they try to drive over.

Surely the left lane is the one which would "end" at the conclusion of the dual carriageway. That being the case, it is your resonsibility to merge successfully into the right hand (continuous) lane. From what you have stated above I don't think the truck driver has done anything wrong.

Mind you, I wasn't there and I don't know the road in question, so I could just be talking out my backside.

No offence intended and hopefully none taken.

    Lightbulb

Call his boss again, tell him you have a witness and have spoken to the coppers. Would they like to pay for the mirror, or would they prefer you went ahead and made a formal statement. Inform them that that would involve being interviewed by the Police. Being a "work place" it may involve work cover (or your state equivalent).

Let them know that you're being reasonable and are giving them an easy out.

They may pay for the mirror. - Let's hope.

What a ******! That justifies his poor driving ablity, so that's alright then.

I had a sort of similar problem when a steel loaded semi cut in from my left at the last second to get to the turn right lane to the SE freeway. Squeezed us into a funnel with nowhere to go, but fortunately he backed off but pushed in front of the poor bloke behind us.

Anyway, "the boss" rang me back on his mobile & I'd swear by his knowledge of the circumstances, that it was him that did it & that he didn't get it secondhand from "his"driver.

Maybe the same in your case.

Another time my 2A LH mirror hit & wrecked the mirror after it hit a real estate agent's sign that had sagged & sloped towards the roadway. Bloke was quite nice about it & sent me a cheque for the damage. But, he did say that if I'd been the type that had rung & abused him, I could get stuffed.

Well if trucking firm is reputable they are generally sensitive about their drivers intimidating smaller vehicles on the road and may agree to pay for replacement costs.

Again most transport companies are small to medium and are operated by their owners which again make them more sensitive to complaints avout their drivers behaviours.

Trucking Industry Associations to contact about incident varies depending on what sort of truck it was NSW Long Distance used to be called Natroads changed to Australian Trucking Industry Association and the NSW Road Transport Association.
