Anyone done the Tanami Track Recently?

If anyone has done the Tanami track recently, could they reply and let me know where there are any half decent places to stop over with my camper. We are completely self contained, but would like to stop twice during the trip, preferably at places with some shade or points of interest.

Tilmouth Well is a nice spot, but not all that far from Alice. It has been a while since I was up that way, but I am sure you could just pull up pretty much anywhere that takes your fancy.

Tilmouth well is a really nice place to stop. Thats where we stopped. Mind you there was a Police party on the night we were there. And boy do they know how to party
We then stopped at rabbit flats which was nice. Then on to a lovely free camp spot on the side of the road About 40k's outside Halls Creek. Its by the river and a bit sceny

My mate with the Defender 110 trayback wants us to do the Tanami next July. I am not bursting with entrhusiasm - especially as we will be driving from Perth.

I am a bit encouraged by some comments here. Is it a nice drive? I have no real mental picture - I do love a nice quiet camp (everything else quiet - we might be loud) in some shade by a river. I guess I thought it was flat, treeless, dry and hot.

    Tanami Track

Thanks for all of the replies. I used Google Earth to check out the entire track and it definitely looks like Rabbit Flat and Tilmouth for us. Most of the track looks pretty barren and I expected that, hence the reason for my post.

We intend to do it during September 2007. We will be staying near Broome and figured it would be a good route to the southern states.

Be aware that the Rabbit Flat Roadhouse is closed on Tues/Wed. And when he says closed, he means it. Expect a shotgun welcome if you venture too close during those days.
