    Digital Maps Whose got em why do they cost so much?

    Dads agreed to splurge on a new set of maps for my GPS, Both sides of it.

    Copilot for street nav in the cities and raster maps for when I'm using oziexplorer and oziexplorer ce..

    its over $500 to get the maps I'm after...(no, I'm not going to hit him for that at those prices I'll pull the big book of maps apart and scan it myself)

    Call me strange but isn't the map data already in existance? Why does it cost more to buy a single CD/dvdrom with the maps I want on it that it does to procure all the dead tree ones (I can get all capital cities UBD's and if the quote is to believed all public general australian topo maps in 1:50000, 1:100000 and 1:250000 for under $400)

    One shop wanted $50 for the state topo maps on cdrom and sitting next to it, was a book of maps all the same scales, all the states with townguides, 4x4 tips, basic first aid instruction, and who knows what else $30.

    anyone got digital maps I can con you into letting me ummm "procure"?

    On a serious note, while perusing i Found here..(the rego bits free and is for info gathering/authentication of downloader only)

    I had a play with the online map maker over dinner and am downloading a sample of the perth maps, aparently (and I might be wrong) you can get all the maps on a DVD for $99 if the trial maps Im getting for the trip work Im going to buy one.

    The best bit...(and this is heavily paraphrased)

    The liscense Says that so long as I distribute them in a not for profit manner, keep the copyright in place, don't misconstrue the data (i can crop/cut and paste) and tell everyone where i got em (see the link above) they are freely distributable.

    I'll be meeting with the lawyering side of the family over xmas, legalese from the site in hand for opinions on what i can and cant do with em once Ive got em...

    I'll let you all know how this turns out for me.

    The GPS australia forum might be worth a visit for you, a lot of the freely available maps are available there

    I got the Natmap premium dvd set for about $100 on 2 dvds and the UBD city maps on dvd for $70. Would like the 1:100,000 maps a friend has, maybe soon.

    mate this is the set dad is looking at springing for for me, does it have the 514 odd 250k:1 maps (on the 4 cds of the standard pack) or is it one hemogeonous blob map.

    natmap premium is a 2 dvd set

    natmap is the cd set and doesnt have the same hi resolution pics the premium has.

    the maps are a multitude of maps that seamlessly flow using the supplied software.

    you can export to one huge file if needed...

    thats how it works for me anyway....
