I thought the bigger issue was how long it ran while upside down. No oil for lubrication. If you remove the glow plugs and turn it over then you should be able to clear anything out of the bores.
G'Day All,
Just wondering if its a good idea to buy a motor from a wreak thats been flipped on its roof?![]()
Im thinking not a good idea as the oil from sump will over time run past the piston rings and fill the bore's, then if its start it will suffer from comp lock.....does that sound right to you?
just asking as Im still looking for options for a motor to drop into a cheap Disco Im thinking about buying, found a 4/95 Defender at Pickles car Auction in Melbourne, but not sure if its a 200 or 300?

95 fender will be 300tdi, as above as long as it it didnt run dry while viewing the ground should be ok.

Don't do it, unless you have one or more spare conrods, and maybe a crank...Last 2 I've seen from rollovers had hydraulic-ed badly and bent rods. The engine oil ends up in the inlet and as it is incompressible...Bang.
There is almost 100% chance that this has happened.
I also heard of a person at an auction that started a 3.9 county that had been rolled, It went off until it blew..They no longer allow people to start them after that!
Get it cheap, pull the head off and measure the piston heights.

use a TDI when you do the measurements. and if they will let you pull the glow plugs out and turn it over on the starter hold a white card to the glowplug holes on each cyl and have a look at what comes out...
a little mist is ok but a hoik of black crap is not so good. if one doesnt push at the card as hard as the others that is also not good.
