    Gold Detectors and prospecting

    Gday All,

Just been doing a little research on metal/gold detectors. Just wondering if anyone had any good results or experiences.Looking at doing some prospecting this year and looking at the price of detectors seems I will be looking at hiring a unit for a week or so.I have never done any prospecting so any advice would be appreicated.

    Cheers

    Paul

I have never done it but my father-in-law does. The last time he went he hired a newer unit instead of taking his. I know you don't need the latest unit and could even find out which one he would recommend for you. The latest big find people think is a bit suspect and aimed at getting the holiday people to rush in.

minelab are good but George has a point. For the cost you may as well hire one.At least they MAY show you how to use it .

Used to do heaps as kids around Kalgoorlie, Boulder and cCoolgardie in school hols. Found a lot of tin cans and the odd artifact etc, It was a great time. Friend of the family had a claim just out of Kal, he lived on site and always found enough to keep looking and buying new machinery etc. I would recommend joining a gem/ rockhunters club, and see if there are any prospecting groups around your area. Get a copy of 'Australian Gold, Gem and Treasure' mag, it has heaps of ads and contacts for gold detecting and some valuable info on techniques and areas to go.
Now, with my own family, we try to go to the Sapphire fields in S QLD as much as poss, we have found a lot of cuttable stones, and now have some great jewellery from it.

    Enjoy yourself
