    Ten Things About Fraser Island

We camped at Cathedral Beach earlier this month and had a great time exploring up & down the beach, and some of the inland tracks. here's a few things we learned while we were there...

    1. A TD5 auto will give you around 17 litres per 100 km when you mix inland track driving (low range, soft sand) with beach driving (high range, hard sand).
    2. The ants really appreciate squashed march flies being placed in their nests.
    3. Doesn't matter if they have 4 inch risers, fat sand tyres and yellow painted springs - Nissan Patrols driven by drunk yahoos still get bogged to the axles (hehehe). We waved as we went past.
    4. The worstest track on the Island is the Waddy Point bypass, to (and from) Orchid Beach.
    5. Soft hot sand in the middle of the day will raise your tyre pressures by 4 psi all round. This is enough to cause problems.
    6. The funnest track in the Island is the bit leading out of Kingfisher Bay resort, before the dingo grid. Keep the seatbelt on.
    7. The big green tourist buses don't give way. To anyone.
    8. You can attract the turtles at Allsom lake by saying loudly "Komm komm, iss food, komm komm" and splashing the water. A German backpacker showed us how to do it.
    9. No matter how many signs are put up at Champagne Pools, some drunk clown will stand on the barnacles and wait for a big wave to wash him off. They usually only try it once.
    10. Mobile phones work at Lake Mckenzie, Orchid Beach and Kingfisher Bay. Anywhere else, you're out of luck.

The more I read about Fraser Island, the less I want to go there, just seeing the ferries loading north of Rainbow was enough...

.......appears, Queensland you can drive, rotten, provided the surface is sand and you have yellow springs, I'm sure you get my drift.......

Maybe one day, when there is an aparthied system - as in: one week a quarter for Land Rover people, the rest for, well, you know......

But, glad you had a good time!

It's not that bad Quiggers. it's just the idiots over there full of **** that ruin it for others.

I ran into many 4WD's in the **** over there when I last went (in '99), some were great and very thankful but I left yobbos to there device most times.

The tour buses haven't changed a bit fron what I hear. I alsmost got cleaned up by one and had a few words with the driver when I seen him later on (I never forget and ********) the first time I went over there. The bloke was a total idiot and a 6 year old had more intelect

Bar a few' annoying' issues, overall a great place to go.

I'd like to go to the high country one day but it's a bit far for me

The last few times I've been to Fraser I have only seen a couple of whacky things... which dissapointed me. No one was really stuck and no one being super silly.

The last time we camped there we stayed on the eastern beach towards indian head. It was sensational. We had the place to ourselves from about 4 through 8 am the next morning. This is just fine with me as during the day I'm out anyway.

It's a kids paradise too... lots of fantastic places to swim. I'm sorry, but it's as close to heaven I know of within a days drive.

1,Yet holden dunnydoor adventras can fly thru indian head bypass as all others get stuck (minus front air dams )

    2. Did you try the track over to Moon Point'the south bound out of Orchid was bad but the moon point track was ATROCIUOS!!!!

3.found you had to play chicken with the big green baddies, stick to your guns and keep that indicator flashing, and headlights,spotties,12 guage hanging out window..............
seems they must drive in a dream land, gotta get to the next stop by such and such a time ,tides dont matter as they can drive anywhere and chew up what ever beach/track they want to

Your fender must be a manual.

My last one was a 300Tdi fender and that returned me 10l/100 easily. I could get that around town, sand, mud (when it used to rain up here) and black hard stuff with a white line down the middle.

Fraser used to nice during off season. Does not seem to have an off season anymore .

Hehe - the best we saw on Indian Head was alittle Suzuki Jimmy - the driver just pointed it in the approximate direction & it just skipped over the sand. It actually went the way the front wheels were pointing!

No didn't get to that one. After the run past the declivity or depravity or whatever it's called, the boss said ENOUGH DAMN TREE ROOTS!!! so we missed a couple of tracks I would've liked to try.
