    Defender vs Discovery

I am in the market for a 4wd, it will be my second car, it will do little work probably 10,000Kms around town during the year, and probably 2 trips to Fraser island, and 6 or so other short off-road excursions to 5 rocks.

I have a total budget of $20,000. I always liked the defenders, but there seem to be a lot of cheap disco's around, are they worth considering?

If it's a second vehicle I would tend to go for the Defender, however there are quite a few Discoverys out there - and some are nice ones. I really enjoy the Disco II I have now and the Disco I which I accidentally totalled

Whatever you get, look over it carefully, get it inspected, ask questions here - there are quite a few chaps in the 'know' here.

    Welcome to AULRO

Yes, the V8 discoveries especially are getting cheap, but only because they are a little thirsty on fuel, Also the defender tends to hold it's value better because it is more sought after.

If I had my time to do over id get rid of the disco for a diesel defender. The disco is great in the comfort stakes but a defender is the better 4WD. I sometimes get the nagging feeling im driving a glorified shopping cart. It constantly suprises people when they see big muddies on the disco. That said it has taken me to some interesting places.

I think you should not bother about either and get a Range Rover!

IMHO I think the Disco is a much better package, not that im bagging Defenders but they are long with lots of overhang at the rear and very uncomfortable to drive long distances in but the Disco suffers for interior space that the 110 or 130 for that matter has bucket loads of.

The drive line is pretty much the same though the Disco has an Auto which is not unbreakable but close to it and the choice of V8 or Diesel and all Discos including the Diesels are getting cheaper.

I don't know what consumption is for an 8 but 200 or 300Tdi your looking in the vacinity to 10 to 13 L/100km which isn't bad for a mechanical injected Diesel.

And they are Comfy as, I drove ours to Alice Springs from Melbourne and driving between 7 and 9 hrs a day I was wrapped in how comfy it was in cruise mode where as the Defenders that I have driven (brand new) were great to drive but you felt like an old man after about 2 hrs in the saddle.

On top of that the aircon didn't work very well and the door seals leaked on both the 110 and 130 that we tried but they are built for work so it depends on what you need it for and If you need to take 15 suitcases and enough food and cooking equipment to cater an army.

I would still have a Defender as I like the slightly more civilized feel over a series landrover but thats only because im a nut case when it comes to these pommy chunks of alloy and steel.

But I wont get rid of the Disco any time soon either and as far as a shopping cart goes, I don't care what anyone else thinks of my Landy I just give them the finger and and park where I want (normally away from shopping trollies)

Try the Disco what do you have to lose, there's a couple on ebay for only a couple of grand, loose change when your talking 4wds.

I've done quite a few 16 hour days(here to Cairns) in my defender and comfort isnt a problem, you get used to the seating position.

By the way sorry any defender drivers I still love them nearly as much as my auto disco.

I forgot that, Driving an Auto disco off road is like cheating at tattslotto you always win, they go just about everywhere and are so easy to drive even the worst drivers enjoy it.

They have lower lock low low range gearing than a standard Hilux or pootrol Manual 1st low range and then you have the hand break if you need to.

with minor mods you can fit 33's and a bit more mods and some cool looking flares you can fit 35's.

Body lift costs a weeks beer money and suspention is less than most peoples weekly mortgage repayments.

A little snip here and some flares there some wider wheels and you have a real weapon that goes every where a defender will go and more with fast glass and auto.

Throw in some Difflocks and maxi drive axels and your nearly at the same money as a Defender and you have your self a very comfy tractor that will go anywhere your meant to go anyway.

Thats just my opinion long winded but an opinion.

I said I did, Im not a small build and I just felt cramped and needed my arm out the window for room.

Im sure that there are people that are comfy in them or else nobody would have bought them.
