Sorry DJ, when Prime Minister John Curtin wanted our troops to come back and defend Australia against a jap invasion, Churchill’s reply was that Australia was expendable and after they beat the Germans they would go and win it back.

Luckily Prime Minister John Curtin stood up to Churchill and got two of the three divisions in the Middle East returned home.

Its funny how something passes into folklore, like Landrovers are un reliable etc.
Not one to defend the British empire, but because WW2 interests me, I googled (too hard to look at the books I have) just what actually happened.
I could'nt figure how Churchill would dare (bottle of scotch a day aside) say as much.
What he said was clever. This was it..
"Australia is seen in London as expendable"
Not quite the same is it?
But its splitting hairs really- todays trivia

Whilst I don't approve of the invasion of Iraq just to get rid of a right royal grub of a dictator, I do think the Americans have acted with great forbearance considering the amount of fire they are taking from the populace. Think what Sepp Dietrich, Panzer Meyer, or Klim Voroshilov would have done if their troops were getting continually shot at and blown up by occupied civilians. Any town that was involved would have become a smoking ruin and any survivors sent to the camps.

I think I have seen the first positive American move shown in the media so far. Apparently the USA is giving away 100 or so Hummers some new some old to the new Iraq security / police service. 100 Hummers lined up in rows looks pretty good.

I agree, it is a lot better publicity than they've been getting to date. I just hope they're also teaching them repairs. The Prisons in Queensland sold off their Hummers a couple of years back. Only one was running, and it only worked in reverse.

I did see a show on an Australian prison a few years ago or may be more that was informing of Hummers used as prison exterior fence patrol vehicles that had a bad rep of always breaking down. I have not heard another bit of publicity about it since then.

That is part of the problem. The coalition forces are building schools, power stations, water treatment plants, hospitals etc. Some of which were destroyed in the war. Some of which never existed in the first place. None of which is reported by the media!

You'd think the hummer makers could at least give the rig a decent horn. Sounds like the one on my old Honda SL125.

Get a horn from a New York Fire Truck. Melts anything at 60 paces.

The drivers in this video are amazingly curteous and better behaved than many in some of our capital cities - even after a bump - no road rage.

These poor soldiers - poorly trained, in crap equipment - in a terrifying situation - amazing they just don't drive straight over anything.

The can't stop 'cause if they did the Hummer(s) may not get going again.
