    Evaporative Cooling

I have been offered a roof mount cooler unit for nix that is about 20 years old ( Breezair) and was wondering if there are any aircon or fridgy guys here that can give me an idea if its worth taking or not. It works good and was only replaced due to the owners house being renovated and its not big enough, its someone i work with that lives near by so i believe his word on the condition of it.

    thanks,
    Nick.

At that age they are not worth much, but then there isn't much to go wrong..so i you ae geting it for nothing then it's worth having.

The installation may cost a bit, but in Melbourne the Evaporative coolers work very well (except on very humid days) - and compaired to mechanical cooling, they are very cost effective to run.

You might need to change the filter panels - but they are quite cheap.

Before you install it, thoroughly clean it, check the pump, and clean the hoses/pipes out. Pretty easy stuff

I have no problem with plumbing or wiring - but cutting holes in the roof and making flashing thats weather proof. - that spooks me.

Great if you can do it.

The plumbing and electics are quite simple and shouldn't cost you much.

Evaporative cooling is not worth the bother. On extremely hot days, it doesn't cool a room as effectively as air conditioning and from personal experience it tends to make everything very moist... and considering its needed specifically for hot days its rather pointless .

We have binned it in place of 5 split systems.

Sorry Joel but I have to disagree, Melbourne has a perfect climate for evaporative - now if you were in the top end - more tropical/humid then I would agree.

On average, there would be 4 - 5 days during a summer that the humidity would be too high to be effective.

I would suggest, especially as you state that it was making things 'moist' - it was either badly installed, or the unit was faulty or of poor quality. They should never make things moist.

Compared to "split systems" the effectiveness of evaporative cooling depends largely on relative humidity - so how effective it is depends largely on where you live.
Evaporative cooling uses far less power than "split system' airconditioners for the same amount of cooling, but they do use quite a lot of water. In most areas of Melbourne and most inland areas they are quite effective, but they are useless in the humid tropics. As with any heating or cooling, the amount of cooling needed depends very much on the design and insulation of the house.

I think I am unbiased - I don't have either, but I have one son with each!
