    Buying Used Car Stories

    I'll start the ball rolling.

A week or so Stacey and i went to sydney looking for a larger replacement for the Laser. We ended up at Minchinbury the car selling centre in sydney with a heap of dealers in one spot. We found a VP Commodore with 160000k on the clock with 3k on it. We took it for a run, like the car so started negotiations. We offered 2k, as it needed two new tyres, had no rego, and the person who traded it took the stereo. They came back with 2500 with 3 months rego, stacey said no make it 2200, they said 2300, so we said 2250. They said no so we went to leave. We decided that 2300 wasnt so bad so went back to the office and ecepted. Then the big fat smelly bloke in the office said "Well theres a problem with the car" Whats that i said? "Well this guy put a deposit on it a week or so ago and we havent been able to get hold of him" Yeah right i think to myself. He then tells me they should know by the end of the day. Stacey tells them we are from Lithgow and that if we leave we wont be coming back so they tell us see you later.

What we didnt tell them is that when we test drove it we went on the M7 twice through the E-Tag things so they will get a fine in a week or two.

Nothing special here. Just the usual "it's in beautiful condition" etc only to turn up and fine it an absolute piece of ****. That's from dealers and private sellers.

Yeah!, they probably traded it for 3K on a car that was loaded by 5K and then thought they could get another 3 out of the deal for the unknowing, Vehicle bought at Motor Auction, $6.5K detailed, put on lot for 10,995, trade-in comes along worth $950 we will give you $2k SOLD then put trade-in on the lot as $3k as is were is you do the sums and see who comes out on top

Yeah, we went to mudgee on saturday and looked an an EL Falcon, hadnt been detailed yet, was filthy, had 240000km on the clock and he told us they wanted 3k for it, he reckoned that they had traded it for 5k (yeah right, if they did as you said they sold the replacement for 5k over what it was worth), we offered him $2500 he said no so we left.

    G'day Ace

Find out if they still have the Sydney Motor Auctions on a Saturday Morning like they used to, it was open to the Public, vehicles came from both the trade (unwanted Trade-ins) and private owners prices used to start from $500 upwards, wreckers used to purchase the Klunkers, I used to bus it down from Brisbane, buy something reasonable for $xyz, with 3-4 weeks rego and drive it home, detail it, sell it, payed for my thirsty Ford Customline and a BMW Motorcycle

somebody in the trade would know if they were still going, used to be able to pay by bank cheque

    cheers.

The longest process I went through was finding my D2. Although it only took about 3 weeks to find her I looked at 27 in total pretty much most afternoons and all weekends.

My main frustration was dealers who just blatently lie in their advertisements and when you call them. No. 22 - Rang the dealer before I went and asked all the usual questions. "Yep she's a beautie, no damage, just off the truck". Drove the 1hr down there to find a car with blood on the roof lining and door, dent RHR corner panel and most interior metal components rusting. Lets just say that I was not in the best of moods and he coped a right serve and an education on customer service and expectations. Feel on deaf ears though

The one I bought: Neg from $21K down to $18K with RWC for a 00MY D2 Td5 5 seater with 160K on the clock & full Lance Dixon LR service history since new. The best condition one I have ever seen for the age & kilometres. Belonged to a retired couple who bought it 12 months ago for a 'Around Australia Trip' but the husband died 2 months after purchase . Quite sad really as the exact same scenario happend to Mum when Dad passed away only 6 months after retirement.

To sour the process of purchasing a car is Stamp Duty. $8 per $200. $720 to the Bracks Government for what? Revenue for roads and alike...think I would like to see some evidence please!

Now just need to sell the Astra. So the tables have turned

Bought a Transit van years back - used. Worked fine on the around the block test drive - NRMA report checked out fine - went to get it a few days later and it didn't even get out of the yard - stuffed auto gearbox. Then they ummed and arrred about fixing it. Turned out in the few days in between - it somehow had another gearbox magically inserted.......

Ended up with a reco box after a fight.

That wasn't very nice of them was it?

I worked with a guy who was arrested by the cops while at work - for leaving the scene of an accident etc.

But when the accident happened the car was in the dealers for service, which took four days Fri to Tues.

Someone at the dealers borrowed his 180b sss and bent it and then spent the weekend fixing it - he was none the wiser - for a while - that was a huge stink.

About 10 years ago was looking through used car yard and saw Subaru wagon that looked familiar so asked about it
"You have just missed the deal of the century" the salesman told me as he ranted on about how great it was and how it had "NO BEACH WORK CAME FROM OUT WEST".

    Walked away in disgust.

What he didnt realise was the reason It looked familiar was because it was my previously my brothers car and was usually on the beach up at Teewah/DI usually every second or third weekend and working pretty hard through the soft sand at high tide (only ever had to pull him out once in my landy).
He was right about it being from the west, West Chermside that is (a suburb in Brisbane ).
And to top it all off he had sold it for $1000 more than my brother had paid for it two years previously.
I made sure I warned everyone I knew that was looking for a used car about that guy.

I got a phonecall from a bloke I know a few years back, he wanted a mate of mine to check out a car he may be interested in. Sure no problem, I gave the guy his number, my mate checked it out, turns out the car was bloody awesome. To good too miss out on. So I bought it.
Just kidding but I bet you had to read this again
