Question Defender TD5 (2003) Intecooler Upgrade

    Hi All!

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with intercooler upgrades for Defender TD5? How mutch did it cost and where did you get it? Are you happy with the new cooler?

You can contact Ritter Automotive (LR Specialists)....In Melbourne....

I know that they have an ECU upgrade and an Intercooler Upgrade available for the Td5 Defender, but they are NOT cheap by any stretch of the imagination...

if you haven't done the ECU upgrade, I'd do that first before thinking about the intercooler

Have just installed an upgraded intercooler from 'PWR performance products' on the Gold Coast that I just got from MR auto's in Redcliffe. Very well made unit, cost $1300 except my one armed, one eyes mate could have done a better job on the mounting lugs which were 20mm too low and 5 mm off centre and had no side gussets for strength like the original one. Considering this holds the radiator and everthing else it was a big bo bo. Also needed modification of the bonnet catch due to it's height and width but just a bit of grinding and shortening of the bonnet center pin and the safety catch itself. A bit of mucking around. They are 30mm thicker than original and 30mm lower. I'm yet to contact them to advise them of the errors in their jig but the unit itself is very very well made, excellent welds, polished etc, rounded ends on the vanes.

The performance?? Heaps. My defender weighs a ton with all the stuff I normally carry and suffered a lot of lag before the turbo kicked in. Now it drives almost like an average sedan. No need to rev, just a normal touch and away you go, then wait for the turbo and she flys. It's actually that good I'm thinking of not bothering with the chip I had planned from MR in the near future. Would I do it again for this, yes!!!!!! It's worth it.

No idea what they cost but Bruce Davis put one in mine for me when he owned it. Guess you could say I got it for the ultimate price.

I have installed one bought from one of the members here. Has it made a difference? - dunno, maybe - was it worth a grand? - dunno, maybe??

Depends how much $1k is worth to you I suppose. If you have better things to spend it on I wouldn't bother, just make sure your original one is in good nick, pull it out and clean it, mine was disgraceful.
