    Lightning

Had this video sent to me at work today.

It was taken yesterday afternoon on the Heathcote Railway Station.

For anyboody that came from the area they would know that a lot of kids from the local high school catch trains and travel south.

Anyway yesterday we had a very severe storm that passed over at the time the kids were all on the platform (around 150-200 kids)
Given they were on both sides I don't know how some weren't seriously hurt

The video speaks for itself. - you need to watch past the first lightning capture.

WARNING: THERE IS SOME COLOURFUL LANGUAGE

    lightning video

The video was taken by a year 9 pupil on her phone. Afterwards as you can imagine there was a fair bit of panic, I witnessed it from the local emergency services centre at the rear of the station and was fully expecting injuries when I got over there, luckily none and all I got was soaked.

Don't know if you remember but right at the start of the overhead bridge there is an overhead gantry for the power, as best we know it struck that, the fire at the end is all the signalling equip & conduits that come up out of the platform.

Having a look at the area today it actually struck the overhead bridge and travelled across the bridge on the metal conduit that holds power for the lights.

    Ground Zero

The melted steel is about 12mm thick. If you slow the video down to about 1/4 speed you can see there is definately more than one zap across the bridge

You should have seen the show about lightning last night. It was on late and showed research on lightning that I had never heard of before.
Lightning emits Gamma rays and X-rays.
Lightning has been getting more concentrated around built up city’s and it getting more frequent and more common.
They now have footage of lightning that starts above the clouds and funnels upwards for 50km or more and it twice the size of lightning that we see under the clouds. The footage was amazing.
As like all the storms we see of late that are getting more intense so is the lightning.
The show was on ABC at 0830pm (Lightning: Nature Strikes back).
