From there originally, i think litchfield eats kakadu for breakfast. Visit all waterfalls in litchfield, they are awsome especially just after the wet!! Kakadu is big, a chopper ride would be best to see it all, (and probaly the cheapest)........

Don't think of doing Lichfield it is a must do i think it was alot better than Kakadu

I agree Litchfield is much better to spend the time. If you get down as far as Kathrine (330km) then do the gorge and falls there too.

As for Kakadu - everything is fairly obviously marked on the tourist guides. Can't remember if you are still allowed in to Twin Falls. Its a good drive if the river crossing's OK (i.e bonnet height on a lifted Disco).

Another thought if you want to do 4WD trip is the Coburg Pennisula.

Litchfield has several camping sites both for 2Wd and 4WD though depending on when you are going they may be closed due to the Wet season. The rangers will not open the track down to the Daly River Road until it has dried out, there is some black soil plains there to cross. Litchfield is compact to visit.
Kakadu has a few camps ranging from basic bush to toilets and showers up to the commercial one at Cooinda which has lawns and a shop. If you want to go on the Yellow Waters cruise you may need to stay there at the caravan park as the best boat tour is the first one which leaves around 6.30am and the other camping sites are a few kms away. Most roads that you are allowed on are sealed except for the one to Jim Jim Falls and Alligator Billabong and also the track to GraveYard Gorge. Twin Falls may be closed until around June or later, depends on what the rainfall is like that year. It has been closed up to late August. There is an interesting track from the Darwin side of the South Alligator road stop to the old Jim Jim road just where it fords the South Alligator upstream.
The Arnhem Highway is closed at the moment, many kays of it are under water and one culvert has been washed out and is being replaced by a bridge, expected to be open later April. The old road which leaves the Arnhem Highway near the Bark Hut is a good gravel road for the first section as it passes the army training grounds so there can be vehicles on the road a lot bigger than you, many of them have machine guns. It is generally a good road but it depends on when the rains finish and how much damage they did.

I grew up in a place called Moline - east of Pine Creek. Kakadu didn't exist then, but has slowly crept south - Moline might even be in Stage 3 now, not sure.

I went back there not so long ago with the Mrs & kids. There are still a lot of good spots in Kakadu that even the park rangers do not know about - you need a bit of local knowledge to find them.

Unfortunately, I never got to see Litchfield - will have to take another trip up there one day ...............
