    Global Warming phoohey !!

A Landy Mate has told me of a programe that is to be shown here to night on Channel 4 about Global Warming apparently it has challenged the claims of the Green Movement that Motors are a major contributor to this change in climate temperatures. I will watch it and if worth it will post an appraisal of what I see and hear. I hope that our Chancellor watches it, it appears that he is considering raising road tax ( Aus Rego ) upto 400-odd £'s a year on 4x4's, that is about a Aud$1000 !! and that does not include third party, it is amazing the power that the media can have on public opinion, a good argue ment would be against the Rolls,Bentley,Jag Brigade,,, otherwise known as MP's !! do as I say types !! bloody marvelous !! one chink of light for some of us though, after vehicle 20 years or so old we get tax exemption. It may well mean a lot of Landys will bite the dust if people cannot afford to pay or rufuse to pay the extra. Anway will report if any good, it is now a Global concern and argument bothways . CO2 follows the increase in temp. not the other way.

Oceans put more CO2 into the atmosphere than than human endevours.

    THE SUN causes it all.

That's a new one, I haven't heard that before, where is the info that I could have a look at, didn't know there was anything burning in the Oceans, the biggest single source of Greenhouse Gas (GG) is Methane (gee CO2 isn't the only GG) from cattle Farts and Belches, Methane is 23 X a more potent GG than CO2 and eventually becomes CO2 after a period of time in the atmosphere, CO2 is the only gas talked about because the powers that be have a Protocol for measuring CO2 and it's take up by growing trees and dont have one for the many other GG's, so they don't really exist, do they, Regards Frank.

We've had a rather cool summer here (near Byron Bay) - relatively - no days of 40+º and few days above 35º, just hanging around the 30º.....

    coolest it's been for years....

sea temps have been warm and icy - within a few days

    no huge storms...

quite different to what it was ten years ago......

global warming must be happening somewhere else, 'cause its not happening here...

One of the problems with this issue is that no one really knows what is going to happen because we have nothing to base our theories against, this is both the doomsdayists and the critics.

Having said that doesn't mean we can go on in ignorant bliss continuing to carry on, on our merry way. the repercussions of the 20th century exesses may not be truely felt until after we are all dead and it is our grandchildren running the place trying to fix the damage.

I personally believe we are damaging our planet ( I'm more of a ecologist than greeny)

but I also drive a V8i disco so I am also a bit of a realist, as we have grown up we have had to deal with the bad decisions of our predessesors

I'm no greeny (wouldn't have a landy if I was one), but surely it's obvious to all that human activity has a huge effect on the planet? Every time we light a fire, start an internal combustion engine or turn on an electrical appliance we increase the temperature of the atmosphere - not much, granted, but with 6billion of us it probably makes a difference. Even the heat from 6bn bodies is an increase in global temps.

I'm a strong advocate of trying to offset the effects we have on the planet, we shouldn't need to go live in caves and eat raw food, but we should probably do something.

actually, low level ozone IS a problem ie greenhouse gas, upper level ozone is good (but jet engines & their high temperatures destroy upper level ozone).

Oceans ABSORB carbon dioxide - but only for so long. then, they will release megatonnes of it. another down side to this is that as the level of co2 in the oceans increase, the acidity of the oceans increase, and this bleaches corals, and kills fish. no more tuna. Oh dear.

for more information, have a gander at the back issues of New Scientist magazine - sounds geeky, I know, but the articles aren't too sciency, quite easy to understand, and VERY scary at times...

Not strictly the high temperatures - the high combustion temperatures generate nitrogen oxides that do the damage. Also jet aircraft increase high level cloud - the cessation of all air traffic over North America after 9/11 had very easily measured climatic effects.

The ocean/carbon dioxide system is not well understood - there are too many unknowns affecting the circulation of water within the ocean and also the fixing of CO2 within the ocean.

But remember that this is not a refereed journal, and it can and does have controversial articles in it that may be contradicted by later articles.
