Not exactly - the local "stealer" has pricing on their Disco II TD5's about $10,000 over the redbook price. Offered me one "at a good price" but still wanted close to $30,000 for a 2000. Apparently they're not shifting them! I wonder why?
I have been trying to find a 2000 - 2001 Defender in the Melbourne Metro area and have found a couple of nice ones at a dealer in Melbourne's East. I did my homework on line and knew what price range they should be in but was staggered to find them asking up to $7,000 over the Redbook price!!!
I double checked with my insurance company and they confirmed that Redbook was pretty close to their own valuation and that I would only be able to comprehensively insure one for about $19,700. My (polite) enquiry to the dealer manager was a rather rude and terse brush-off in that "I was not a serious buyer"!
Anyone else had an equally unpleasant experience like this?

In the end a vehicle is worth what someone will pay for it regardless of what Redbook says.
I know of a Defender (2003 I think) recently sold out of Port Hedland 80,000klms very good nick for $36,500 wholesale. I'm trying to figure out what I should put on my 2003 Xtreme with 65000klms.
I won't be approaching the stealers/dealers as according to them of course there's no market for used Defenders....... or any other vehicle either!
Except at the insulting low price they'd give me for it.
Alan.
Yeah I agree with Alan.
I brought a 2001 Extreme 18 months ago, in really good nick with heaps of extras and 75,000 for $30k. Including an extended warrenty.
This was above redbook at the time, and above what the insurance company told me it was worth when i tried to insure.
However I was looking in the 20k range at a tdi for a long time and for me it was worth that extra money.
I have noticed the td5 defender being advertised at lower prices of late, these just didn't seem to be around when i was looking however.

+ 2016 D4 TDV6
Take 20 grand off for starters...
Milton: Now wonder they're called '4WD specialists'; they've got heaps in the yard to play with, not going anywhere in a hurry.
So I could flog off my 93 Disco for like, maybe $15,000, by that reckoning![]()
Amazing isn't it? They wont give you 2 bob as a trade-in, but whack it on the yard and 'whacko'!!!

I bought my '97 300Tdi 8 months ago, and no one (private or dealer) anywhere is Australia was selling Defenders anywhere near the Redbook value. When I went to insure it I wanted to insure it for $20K (because it had $18K worth of accessories). RACV insured it for $20K, then told me that the accessories were insured over & above that base figure!!!!
You should be able to get insurance above Redbook pretty easily.
I was wondering about used Defender pricing as well. From what I can see a new Defender costs about $50K new. Then why is this three year old one worth $46K?? Can anyone let me in on the secret?
Its not just here
In the UK we have the same problem
You get the Uk version of Red book and they will tell you a land rover is a certain price and you will never ever find one for that price , as they are all about 5 grand(pounds) over that price
Had a mate who phoned them up and questioned the price of a 90 200 TDI which they had priced at 5 grand for a good conditon one. They told him they could buy them and that was the going price. So he told the bloke to go and buy him 10 at that price and he will give him a 5 grand thank you
The bloke did not take him up on the offer.
When it comes to land rover those books are so far out.
But as for new and nearly new price. Same in the Uk it can be only 500 pounds defferance btween a new one and a year old one. Make me wonder who buys a year old one. I would rather spend a bit nmore and get a new one
