Here's some more pics......and a couple of questions to go with them...

I think this started life as a diesel and had a petrol transplanted at some stage.

I have removed the roof and rear cab, seats, belts etc., and given it a once over and tidy up.
I've found $8.75 so far in change
The dash and instrument panel will be coming out and I'll be checking the brakes. Have already found a couple of holes in the lines. The drums look rusted on .

Not the ideal workshop, thus why the roof had to come off anyway.

Only major rust in the firewall/body - small and easily repairable

    Seat boxes and interior

Disgusting blight on such a fine carriage - a Holden steering wheel - this disgraceful 'addition' will be replaced before its (legal) debut on QLD roads

Lights and switches work - but don't look too good.
Fuel gauge doesn't - yet to investigate

Stupid Question 1. What is the bottom middle switch in this photo?

Engine. Radiator is reasonably new, but needless to say the contents aren't exactly clean. It runs remarkably well

Stupid Question 2. What is this round bracket on the LH side behind the battery? A kettle holder ?

Stupid Question 3. Was the bracket beside the radiator here for an expansion tank?

Stupid question 4. What purpose does the battery under the seat serve?

OK that's it for now....will post up some pics as hopefully will make some more progress over the weekend, (if I can get Darcy our 4yo out of it). he loves the thing..ah another tragic to the fold

Thanks for the interest, assistance and answers thus far.

Q2 the oil bath air filter mounting bracket

Ah,, thanks mate, thought that may have been the case.
My other suspicion that it was a diesel was the "diesel fuel only" sign under the filler cap

What's the ruddy great lump of iron connected to the second battery?

The bracket on the right looks like expansion tank to me, too, but I'm not familiar with the engine bay of a 4.

NFI on the switch, but I'd be going either with washers (if fitted) or horn as my guesses. Is there a prize for the first person to guess what it does?

NFI myself and no prizes. But when it is in the 'up' position it kills the engine. For now it's a kill switch. Is it meant to be? NFI again

Ok, Q1, bottom middle swithch with the label above it that looks like a propellor is for the heater blower . the push bitton near it is for the windscreen washer jets.

Yes, that bracket is for the big oil filled air filter. Yes, there should be an expansion tank on the RHS of the radiator.

No idea about the batter hooked up to the transmission, very strange. To stop electrolytic rusting maybe?/ who knows, but free battery LOL

Oh, and I like it as a workshop, much better than the carport i'm using

Oh, and fuel gauge not working in the series 3 is iften caused by a dead sender in the tank, or the float being full of fuel and not floating any more.

I hate this thread Matt as it is feeding my series 3 urges.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    1. If you mean the toggle switch, its the heater fan - the pushbutton is non-standard, possibly windscreen washer.

    2. Air Cleaner bracket
That carburetter does not look standard - Holden one? Fit a Zenith or Webber.

    3. Expansion tank.

    4. The second battery - Series 2/2a and probably early Series 3 diesels had two BIG six volt batteries in series, one under the seat, one under the bonnet.
