I think the difference is betwwn the locally fitted, and uk fitted air conditioning. Somebody else will be able to confirm that though.

All Uk (factory) fitted A/C in defenders have a grill that sticks out. Rare in the Uk for obvious reasons . But they are around. They stick out to take the A/C fans on the front of the rad

That's right.
Prior to factory air, the A/C was a local kit fitted prior to delivery (made by AMC).

Interestingly the sticky out grill bit looks like it came out of exactly the same mold as the one on the factory aircon counties. Some must have kept the mould stashed.

Now that i think about that isn't so strange for landrover.

are the round vents on the lower passenger side of the AMC unit still available?
if thats what they are :P....

Is the UK fitted AC or the locally fitted unit better?
