    Exclamation Tsunami Warning

For those in coastal areas you might want to look at the Tsunami warning just issued by the BOM for NSW (probably SE Qld as well). This follows a major earthquake in the Solomons at 0640. It is not known yet if it produced a tsunami.

In my view the risk is fairly small, but does exist - if I was on the coast I would stay off the beach this morning, and if close to it keep an eye out and the radio on.

Unlikely to be serious there or anywhere on the north coast of Qld, as it would break on the barrier reef and although you may get a bit of slop from this, it is very unlikely there will be a major tsunami at Hamilton even if there is on the outer reef.

Currently listening to the situation on Norfolk Is (if there is a Tsunami, due there at lunchtime) - the ABC radio for Western Plains is the one broadcast on Norfolk for some reason.

Latest report (0908) confirms that a tsunami has been generated, and is still being assessed as to whether it will be significant outside the immediate area of the Solomons.

Local radio is having a field day here, right now!

Byron Bay to Ballina - and some residents have rung in saying they're on the way to higher ground etc.....

    sounds like a major beatup......

    Time to go surfing!
