Driving from Syd to Alice Springs ...

Thinking of doing this for a conference in Alice in a month or so, and then flying the little woman in afterwards and driving home.

Seems its about 3000km (give or take 2-300) I recon around 1.5 days for the style of driving I do (18+ hours a day no issue) ... anyone done it laterly, hows the drive, what to look for, whats the FASTEST way there, and the prettiest way home to keen the little woman amused..

While there will do the usual things, get the defender dusty and all...

If I knew exactly where Sutherlandshire was I could print out a 'fastest' route for you.

I found Sutherland - near Sydney, but haven't a clue where the shire is.

Give me a town name and I'll run the 'fastest' route for you.

Haven't done it for over forty years, so I guess that is not "laterly", but hasn't changed much except there is a lot more bitumen - Sydney - Broken Hill - Port Augusta - Alice. Except for the mountains in NSW it is all flat and pretty straight.

Anywhere except in real desert country avoid driving at dawn or dusk - you don't want to tussle with the wildlife.

I drove from Sydney to Alice in a Series 2 in 1964 and 1965 and from the Simpson to Sydney in a 2a in 1966.

Fastest route according to 'Mapsource' is straight out to 'Broken Hill - Peterborough - Port Augusta - Alice Springs.

    Supposedly 30 hours driving @ 2811km

    Thanks for all the replies..

Coming home most prob 2 weeks max, so a nice relaxed trip back, I thought that would be the best way, but you never know these days ...

I did a big drive a few months back, and had no issues with wildlife. .. but it really was not so much up the centre..

I think I have talked myself into it

Last time I did Sydney to Alice was 5 days, via Port Augusta, I was towing a small caravan with a 351 ZC Fairlane, but I wasn't mucking around.... was dirt north of Port Augusta to the border, all tar now, apparently.

Why not just go straight up to Bourke, then head west to Finke? I assume you'll be driving a Land Rover, Cameron....
