Cape York Trip leaving Cairns 17 Aug. Anyone want to join me.

Well I've booked my reservations for my meetings on Hayman Island finishing on the 14th. Can be up in Cairns by the 16/17. Anyone want to tag along on a Cape York trip? Am planning on a 2 week trip from Cairns up to the top end and back to Cairns. Will then either drive from there home to Melbourne, or ship the Defender home, and fly. I will have my 6 year old, and very eager navigator and possibly my wife (Hayman island is her idea of camping) with me for the top end trip. Have never been North of Port Douglas, and that was 19 years ago. Would like any ideas of where to go, and things to see. Also want to know if there is anything I sould see on the trip up, and return trip. Overall will take a bit over a month off work for the journey.
    Any suggestions welcome,

    Ken

Sounds like a great trip. Would love to join you, but a bit far off for me. But I'll get there one day - look forward to reading about it when you get back.

    Have fun.
    Cheers .........

your going to be spending a lot time sitting in the car travelling by giving yourself only 2 weeks

In 1986 when l did the Cape York trip it took 5 days to travel from Cairns to the Tip as the old telegraph road whilst well defined was a complete non stop corrugted test bed and we had to individually wrap everything in the food and drink containers to stop them rubbing against one another and breaking and that includes the eggs in the egg carton in tissue paper and every morning walking around the car testing the wheel nuts for tightness. the oscar spot lights fell off the bull bar, the cb aerial fell off the bull bar the ARB spare wheel swinglocking arm shattered itself off the ARB rear step bar.

Places to stay Fruit Bat falls is best falls in the Cape, bigger wider river area more flat land for camping on

Camping on beach was fun at the Cape and fishing off the beach did produce results the day trip out to Thursday Island was worthwhile and interesting to see the old coastal forts the views of the Torres Straights.

    Cape York

This is what I need to know. If 2 weeks is too short, how long should I allow?

    Thanks,

    Ken

IM0 2 weeks is plenty if your just looking around, there's alot to see, but there is also a lot of space in between.Go to Lakefield Nat. Pk, Iron Range, Captain Billy Landing, Vyrila Point,Somerset, the various waterfalls and if you must, the Tip itself.(long way to go for a ridiculous Ferry Fee, a sign on a rock and a crap campground). Do the Tele track up and back, the main drag is dull as.1000kms from Cairns to the tip, drive to the conditions and 14 days is heaps.
    The Ugly Duckling-
03 Defender Xtreme, now reduced by 30%.
