I decided my Compac Presario X1404AP laptop needed an upgrade from 512Mb to 1.256Gb of RAM so I ordered a 1Gb memory upgrade.

It arrived today so I eagerly installed it.

Oh well. My laptop won't boot up with the memory in place so it's back to the old 256Mb+256Mb memory and a machine that is slower than the Second Coming. I'm sure it wasn't this slow when I bought it some years ago.

It's the right memory according to the Kingston site. Now to convince the supplier that it's faulty. (I'm assuming that as there is only one user-accessible memory slot, that's where it should go and the base 256Mb RAM stays somewhere inside the guts of the machine. In other words, the 1Gb module doesn't have to be in the internal first slot.)

By heck I hope our present bathroom/laundry/toilet upgrade goes well. Maybe it will as my wife arranged all of it.

Ron .. Have you tried the 1GIG memory stick by itself?? ... (don't use the other sticks)

No, 'cos I don't know where the other one is. I guess I'll have to open up the laptop to find it. It's not user-accessible. Just the stick I removed is accessible.

I'm working on the theory that your old 256 is "SD" RAM and your new stick is "DDR" .... If you wait till the morning ... I'm sure 1 of the "Tech" members will know what to do

    Cheers ...

Does that mean they are incompatible?

    The old RAM is PC2700 256Mb DDR 333 CL2.5

The new is Kingston ZD7000/1G which also appears to be DDR 333 CL2.5

Does the bigger module need to be in slot 1? Kingston's site suggests not.

If you need to test it in another laptop, there's a little Mac here that takes that flavour.

sometimes updating the bios to the latest version will sort that sort of problem out...

some compaq bios will not support that ram configuration until the later bios update.

the necessary files and instruction should be on the hp site...

and check ram guide here http://www.memoryc.com/kingston-configurator.html

and the chart shows the laptop only supports a max of 1gig in any configuration

Yes, I saw that but the table says 2Gb max. Confusing.

I guess I'll have to open up the laptop and try the memory in slot 1.
