sure does
i'm never going 4wd again
well at speed that is
Got some great ones from a good friend in the Falklands, some of you may be familiar with the roads over there, others not.
i may add the driver was newly arrived and a female, as were all the 3 occupants.
For the uninitiated, they are in my opinion the roads from hell.
They have no MOT/rego checks over there.
Once outside stanley, the road to MPA(Mount Pleasant base) abd surroundng areas, is dirt ,gravel, badly cambered, elevated, adjacnet to minefields, subject to 100kmph plus cross winds, usually wet, punctures are an everyday event.
this is the result of a defender doing a head over turkey role,3 times i was told, on a down hill bend, gravelly section. I drove the road lots of times and I fugured 60kmph was max speed.( after all the 90 I was using has no tread, and as a ragtop is was buffetted horribly when the wind blew, making it go sideways a few times)
Here we go, the main injury was a cracked rib and shoulder, they survived
A good panel beater could fix this
the cracked rib and shoulder passnger is on the left of the photo
this one is for you keen eyed people, checkout the rust in the chassis
here is one i got a few weeks ago, this one was a fatal i was told.I think it was on the MPA road as well, if not it may have been the road to Goose green
Makes you think doesn't it.

Thanks pedro,
I suppose that makes sense, i laugh when people talk about bad aussie roads, they are nothing compared to the roads over there, I know the accident rate per capita is high over there, a bit like the sheep ratio.
I have driven a lot of miles on bad roads, here in the US and Europe, but nothing compares with falky roads, i used to have a beer with Bob the Builder the man responsible for the roads when i was over there, he kept reminding me they were fine if you drove the right way.
So when i thought I was speeding i was only doing 60kmph, one trip one of the guys kids started calling me miss daisy because of the way i was driving, 2 hrs to get somewhere they take 1 hr for.

G'day JohnE![]()
Brilliant Photosthe Defender held together well considering it was a high speed roll, it appears that the front pillars have been cut (during rescue??) I have seen several 110's and Defenders up at British Off Road near Nambour that have angled roofs
some as much as 45 degrees
it is suprising how well they hold together considering the construction method.
It does make you wonder if you really are safer in a low dollar eccono car, duel airbags or nottheir speeds would be similar to the western Qld country roads, where ute rolls usually are fatal, (but they are mostly Eastern Asain vehicles)
The rusty chassis is an indication of the salt in the atmosphere and the damp. same problems on the Fraser & Moreton island vehicles
cheers
Besides driving silly over there could mean you end up in here
and to repeat an older one the carpark here at the gun club should give you an idea of some of the stuff they use to surface the roads,
john
BTW the tar ends about 2 kms out of stanley, but the minefields go further
