When the 110 replaced the Series 3 109 in Ausralia, apparently a decision was made by JRA to discontinue the Series 3 altogether, perhaps because they were deeply involved with the Perentie project, or because they wanted to concentrate on the new vehicle. (The 90 replaced the 88 Series 3 almost two years after the 110 replaced the 109)
Apparently the demand for the short wheelbase was insufficient to pressure them to introduce it here when it became available. One reason may have been that it was not available with the V8, and the Isuzu, which used the V8 gearbox and transmission and hence panels, was seen as a bit much power and weight and too much modification for the short wheelbase - and the four cylinder engines were regarded as underpowered, particularly the diesel, and it was obvious by then that most sales would be diesels.

These arguments did not apply after the Tdi engine came in when the 90/110 was renamed as the Defender (1989)- but there were no Defenders imported for about a year or more then to avoid impacting on Disco sales. Later, around 2000 I think, the 90 was introduced here but apparently sales were so poor that they later discontinued it. It is probably still available to special order if you are insistent enough.

Get the early mid 80's one for the defender. They are Galvinised . That is what we swaped ours over for before we got it respayed. Learned after i had a 91 90 do the same thing.

BTW how did yours come over then. ours did not have any problems with rust on the way over, or anything . Looked the same as when i left it at the docks

oh the 2.5 petrol 90 i had one of them. No power but the ecomy of a V8. And the 5th gear was like a brake. You put it in 5th and it slowed down

But there were V8 90's in the early days of the 90's but then as no one bought them due to fuel cost . Then they stopped making them in about 1990's About the time the tdis started coming out.

When i got it, it had 6.00x16s on it, and it was quite spritely, but when i put the 7.50x16s on, there was a noticeable power loss. Good thing about it though, is I have the 1.4:1 high range transfer gears, and if anything, it's just a little bit under geared with the V8 and 33s. Sits just above 2500 RPM at 100km/h.

Actually they released the 90 in the US in 1994 with the 3.9 EFI V8 out of the disco, and stopped selling them there in 1997 I think because they would have needed to fit air bags, the very last ones were fitted with autos, and they released a limited edition one in Japan in 1998 with a 3.9 EFI V8, auto and leather seats I think.

By the way there is a yellow TD5 that is owned by a mate that lives in newfarm. It's quite a car too if you get to see it. Lots of nice little mods.
