I am not sure of the amps required, but I have a 'cheap and nasty' power packs, and it started my DII V8 when I needed it.

It gets regular use as my wife has a great habit of leaving her lights on in her ford.

I think diesels need a few more cranking amps to turn them over than a petrol.
I had a 24AH one from Supercheep - it was no good for turning over the TDi.
I think it may be that those gel cell type batteries just can't supply the amps needed.
A proper second battery setup (which i have now ) is probaby the better way to go.

Was thinking about daul batteries but have been told the biggest battery is only 80 amps, this will only run my fridge for about 8 hrs.
So i thought i could just run it on the car battery and have power pack for emergency
If there is a bigger battery set up that someone knows about i would like to know
    cheers

thats 10amp/hr, do you have a compressor fridge or a three way fridge, if compressor it should be much more than 4-5amp/hr at worst and remember the fridge will cycle approx 50% of the time

you start battery will not like being drain all the time

i would seriously look at a dual battery setup

i did the following setup for my dad as he has a falcon station wagon with a 40L engle in the back, we brought an AGM battery (save for use inside the car) and housed it inside one of those black plastic battery boxes with a couple of cig sockets and a couple of terminals, all wired in with a battery isolator, we used anderson plugs inside the wagon so that it can be removed quickly if the battery was needed foor the camper trailer or was needed for a jump start. we were looking at one of the waeco/engle thumper type portable batteries that you see in the ad's but they are way to expensive for the amount of amp/hr you get out of them

    you need truckloads of amps...

a super cheap one wont cut it, (might if your only just not starting but not dead flat)

for the price of one thats going to do it reliabley time and time again and last more than a couple of years you can DIY a dual battery set with the stuff that drivesafe sells.

i bought one of those 1500 amp projecta jumpstarters which is one the more powerful units on the market cost between $250-300 depending where you go and kicks my 4l v8 over no probs. I set up my own battery packs as well to run my engel ( $50 battery box from supercheap) and couple hundred on a deep cycle battery was more cost effective than $700 unit in a fancy cover.

    All the best Mark
