I would think the legalities are quite severe,,
tyres must be rated to the cars capacity.
I'm sure if insurance companies and police become involved it would turn nasty.
would a reputable tyre fitter sell you under-rated tyres?
Hey All,
The tyres on the disco are wearing out and have decided to change up from the stock Michelin's. I've been looking around and have decided on the Mickey Thompsons ATZ but the problem is they don't come in the 235/70r16 but the closest that they have is 225/75r16. The difference in diameter is only 0.3inches so the speedo change is about 1%.
The issue i have is what are legalities regarding the change in size from what's on the tyre placard on the drivers door? Also according to the tyre placard, the disco requires that the speed/load rating is at least 105 T. The load rating isn't the problem as they are 120 rated but the speed rating is only R. Again what are the legalities of this?
Many thanks
CaptJimmy

I know that up here you can go plus 15mm in total rolling diameter above maximum optional wheel size offered from the manufacturer for that vehicle. Load rating and speed rating must remain the same or better. I wouldnt want a tyre delaminating on me at speed because it couldnt hack a highway run. The reality is that unless youve turned the disco into a monster truck with a six inch lift and 35's no one will look twice beyond the load rating and speed rating.
In NSW , A M&S rated tyre (with Mud and Snow printed on the casing) can be a lower speed rating, I think N.
Have a look on the RTA site.
If the load rating is OK, you should be OK.
You have to affix a sticker to the dash to be completely legal, but who does???
I know this is no good in other states eg Tassy but you say you are in Sidddeney.

Hi Philip
You have a much better range of sizes as the Disco2 has more tyre clearance.
255/70 x 16 on mine,speedo error is around 5 kph @ 110.
245/75 x16 are slightly bigger.
Im looking at putting my 255/70s on the Rangie and getting 235/85 for the D2(taller still)as I do like to get off-road.

The taller the side wall the greater the clearance under the diff D2 wise
As long as the load rating and speed index is correct you shouldn't have a problem 235/85/16 is the most common upgrade
Drops the revs a tad as well this is a good thing my D2 V8 at 120kmh does just under 3000rpm and thats with standard michelins 235/70/16
Different tyre manufacturers will vary slightly in size even though they state same sizes
Cheers Ken
