    Which way home?

I am off to Cape York in August from Melbourne. Have a plan to get to Cairns, but don't want to follow the same track home. Am heading towards Brisbaine, and then up the coast, with a stop in the witsundays. If I look at a map, the most direct route is south from Cairns, is through the birdsville track. I don't want to do two major tracks in 1 go. What about across the top towards Darwin, and down the middle? Is this a good idea? What other options does anyone reccommend?

    Thanks,

    Ken

We came back from Cape York (to Adelaide) via:
    - Karumba (pretty interesting. The only place we stayed in a caravan park in 6 weeks 'cause we were scared of the crocodiles)
    - Mt Isa (didn't have a mine tour booked, so missed out dammit. Pretty big place)
    - Three Ways (Can't remember what was here)
    - Tennant Creek (Got out of there as fast as I could - didn't feel safe)
    - Alice (bit the same as Tennant Creek, but interesting)
    - Ayers Rock (fantastic camping in the desert)
    - Coober Pedy (fantastic underground places)
    and then down to Adelaide.

It's a big drive! Outback roads were very good quality from Karumba through to Three Ways, mostly single lane bitumen where you pull off a bit when someone comes the other way.
