Thread: Tyre Pressures in Sand again

So assuming the tyres are let down was the pace OK? Would they have been better off in something like low 2nd or 3rd at a brisk walking pace?

Its hard to tell from the video because there was music in the background but my guess is that they got up a bit of momentum then realised they were revving hard, changed gears and thats when the problems started. That bit of track isnt usually too hard, a bit powdery but not much of an incline so most vehicles driven correctly on the right tyre pressures shouldnt have a problem.

3rd or 4 th low would be the go

I'm glad someone asked about what gear they should have been in. When I went to Fraser years ago (300tdi Disco) it was my first and only sand driving.

I found that I had to use 3rd low range to go through the soft, dug up bits because if the revs dropped a little too low in high range, it would bog down. I was on 22psi I think at the time. I didn't get bogged but did stop at one point and had to reverse back out. Into low range and it was fine through the same track.

I've always read not to use too low a gear in soft sand (I even think there was a comment to that effect on ExplorOz where this was posted originally), but my Disco would require clutch slip and just doesn't have the power below 2000rpm so I felt I had to use low range. Maybe a petrol V8 is better?

Sure, I know more now and if conditions were worse I could lower the pressure even more...

What pressure do you guys think the Hilux should have had to get through that bit?

I've never used low range through there. With the correct pressures that location isn't an issue, actually I can't think of anywhere on Fraser that is an issue including Ngarla, though a lot of people seem to get stuck at Ngarla for some reason. The Hilux probably would have gone through at 20-25psi

I remember a while ago I took a friend on to Rainbow for his first time on sand from track no 1 down at Noosa.
I was in a Vitara and he had a 2nd generation Honda CRV. First view we got was a fisherman bogging a 45 traytop going on to the beach. it was obvious he left it in 2WD and underestimated.
Anyway we get up to the Cherry Venture and there is some dork doing the backpacker thing in an old Navara at the entrance to the corduroy track. Backwards and forwards etc etc, which made my friend pretty nervous
I had my friend drop his pressures to 18 PSI before going on the beach.

The exit looked pretty soft , so I went first and stopped as soon as I got on the corduroy. I told him by hand held to give it heaps on the hard sand and away he went, straight past us , and he wouldn't stop until he got over to the lagoon on the North side ( he didn't realize that there was wood under the sand LOL). The CRV went like a beauty. you could see the fronts spin then the backs leisurely take up the slack.
At Rainbow he was anxious to go to the wash bay, and paid for the oil . He ended up with oily **** all over the CRV for the rest of our trip to Magnetic. Had to clean off the screen just to see .
His first water crossing was the little creek on the Daintree track, where he dipped the clutch in the middle, but he then got through.
He always remembers the first time.

mate thats NOTHING,, the entry to freshwater, on any sunday, is PACKED with shiney toyomitsans,,
parked anywhere,, I'm sure most are there watching others get bogged,,
