    What's wrong with electronics??

Tusker got stuck bigtime last Sunday, Standard tyres & deep gooey bogholes don't mix.

I shut it off when water was sloshing over the bonnet. She was listing to the drivers side, the tide mark is about half way up the doors.

I could hear the bubbles under the seat, got a bit frantic when cold water was in my boots..

Snatched out, started up fine, thought nothing more of it. If water can get in, it'll leak out methinks. Clean it out later. And I will this weekend.

Ran fine Mon-Tues-Wed. But yesterday, she stopped. NRMA wasn't impressed seeing under the drivers seat, it was essentially full of water. It had run like that for 3 days. The ECU, relays & fuses had been covered. There's a tide mark on the inside.

Back to Carl's workshop at Thornleigh, spent all day cleaning & drying & spaying magic stuff. We got the water out with his vaccum pump, 5 litres...

Cracked the ECU open, totally dry inside.

But as of now it still won't go. No fuel to the engine. Relays get replaced today, then Saturday its cut holes in the floor to get to the pump. Its unlikely to have died at 98,000 km, has to be mud in the connections somewhere.

So I was quite impressed with the fact it ran normally. Fits with story a of 90 written off in Cape York a couple of years ago. An LROC member drowned it, up to dashboard level. It was left for a few weeks, when the insurance recovery team arrived - it started.

Anyway, here's hoping my problem is something simple.

it is, its getting voltage leak around the relay, fuse and bus connector bases... dry it out and its all good again...

    as a precautionary measure tho..

I would be stripping the box down, disconnecting the batteries, hosing the electrics box out and being very liberal with the non filming electrical contact cleaner then letting it sit in the sun for a day.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but having read the above, I did just think of the dual battery controller I'm about to put in the passenger seat box, and that maybe that was a dumb thing to do?!

I wanted to keep the charging leads short, so that seemed the best place as it's next to both batteries there, but should I be looking at re-mounting it, some type of waterproof enclosure, or using one (If such a thing exists) that's waterproof? Or am I just worrying needlessly?

    Thanks!

Water and electrics. Best fix I know.

It's not cheap, but there are waterproof "Marine" battery banking switches. And battery boxes. And switches, and lights.
And CB\CD\AM\FM\marine band radio\stereo units. Pierce Simpson Sea Simba.
Eutectic, no moving parts, fridge and freezer gear. Space shuttle stuff, -40 degrees OK for your freezer?
Wanna winch? 250 + ton pull enough? Bigger than that your looking at 24 Volt.

All 12 Volt, exactly like automotive, just a little chunkier, more robust, and really waterproof.

Sorry to sound sort of flippant. But it just makes sense to me.
If you are going to splash in puddles, do try to keep the electrics high and dry.
Keep batteries high, move the alternator ,higher up on the engine block, if you can.
Tape, shrink wrap, tacky wrap, and generally seal every electrical lead under window level.
If it is petrol, tape over and seal every high tension lead on coil and distributor.

Way back when I was a kid, dad used to throw a bucket of kero all over the engine, first rains. "Keeps the water out of the electrics, boy." That was a 1952 side valve De Soto. Probably not so flash for these modern trucks.
    Bad idea Shorty.
I'm astounded that all this vital electrical gear in these new Landies, is under the body work, sort of, and so vulnerable.
The old Series models may be a bit (ahem) dated, and mine is starting to show her age, but they do have some sensible design points.

Diversion and hijacking completed, I hope some of the above can at least be food for thought. If it gets some one through a bad spot, even better.

    Shorty.

Could be it, the one I'm referring to was auctioned off in Townsville I think. Maybe Rocky.

may have rusted the contacts on the relays.

It must be possible for the ECU and relays be enclosed in a water tight enclosure.

I think this is what Shorty was talkin about but could you put one of those plastic black battery box's like in most boats. would they work ??

I'm struggling to fit both batteries under the seat. It is somewhat snug without a battery box or two.
