Too bad if your stuck between a fallen tree blocking the track and an impossible climb out, what are you meant to do walk out and get a ranger?

The point of that is your not allowed to collect fire wood from a national park, I have never heard anyone say it's illegal to carry a chainsaw in your car in a national park before.

I agree with you - I usually take my saw (when I will be 4x4ing anyway - often find fallen trees across tracks). Some NPs do have rules prohibiting you carrying a chainsaw (or a rule that it has to be dismantled).

I know here are some chainsaw connisuers ( I spelt that wrong, Ron eart your heart out you're not here!), I want a good reliable one as we tend to get into some remote areas and my skills with an axe are non-existant.
So far I am contemplating the following:
    Husky
    Dolmar
    Echo
    Stihl
Anyone got suggestions from personal experience?
I have owned 2 Sthils' in 30 years. I have just today bought number 2 and if you look underneath and find Made In Germany, that's the one to buy. Plenty of grunt and she's going to last. I have had a few others and they don't cut the mustard. Be prepared to shell out over $1300 though! These are the commercial ones.

A lot of NP's only have one access/egress route.

So what happens when you are camped overnight, a tree has come down across the track and you have a medical emergency that you have to get one of your party to 'medical aid'.

Maybe you could just point out to the ranger that you carry the chainsaw for safety reasons. There are not too many people who can argue against safety.

However, we must always do the right thing because if you don't and you end up in court, you'll be putting your future in the hands of 12 people who were not smart enough to get out of jury duty!

Which is why I do not own one (I don't have wood fire, either. Had one on Norfolk Island and had it replaced with LPG).

Ive got an old Mculloch 70 its around 35years old has had a hard life and still works great its on its 3rd bar and ive forgotten how many chains its the perfect size and has great balance has no chain break or fancy auto oiler and it comes with me on trips allways ....

As for Nat parks not letting you carry one in the car well the same goes for guns too and do ya think they would pull up each 4x4 and search for a gun let alone a bloody chainsaw i think not .....
