    Building stairs

I have to build a stairway to the mezzanine at work and I want to know if anyone knows of any Demo yards I may be able to buy a second hand set of stairs.

Failing that, I need to know how to build stairs or if one of you blokes is a chippy that could help me out.

If I build them it will be out of steel and the material list is huge and the labour is just as huge so Im after the cheapest and easiest way to get out of it.

The mezzanine is 2.5m high and I can only come out 2.5m as well so It looks as though by my uneducated calculations that I will need to build a 2 tier sort of thing.

This is one of those sounds good at the time things, Yeah boss I'll knock up a set no worries sort of thing about 2 months ago.

    Not being there,
measure the rise then the run, then less one tread(thats the ground or floor).

avg run 270-280, also called the going.

    avg rise 190

Here is a small table for you to work it out, on a 2.5 it won't work, maybe a steel spiral.?

    make sense

most flights of stairs (any staright run, even up to a landing) are about 35% and 2.5 high x 2.5 out is 45%

can you start at 90 degrees to the mezz and have a landing and turn back to the mezz to get up?

also a good builders hardware will have premade steel stringers(the supports you put the treads on) but probably only straight flights

at least you could see how they were made or modify to suit

Being for work, you must make sure that you meet Australian Standards regarding stairs. If you do not and there is any incident you may be held personally liable, being the designer and constructor. Generally in steel you can buy the pitched railing and angle it to your requirements inside the standards. Usually grid mesh for the steps with anti slip capping and handrails. Do not build but have been in a few investigations to sets that have not met standard. Worksafe can prohibit use of items that are not up to standard.
    Good luck.

In the same predicement at the moment designing stairs for a 2650 rise over 3070 length governed by the fact it is to a habited room (bedroom) and is required to have certain head height factors included.
attatched is the best design that we can come up with to fit in the space

sorry if the picture is not very clear but the tread width is 240 mm (going) and height 176 mm (rise) total width of stairs 900 mm wide with the landings 900x900

good luck with it all you'll need it!

    Hey mate,

You can try demo companies like Reidy The Wrecker or the Delta Group, but they don't usually keep them intact but they salvage the materials.

the other way is to call someone like Stairlock International and have them build them for you. they are well priced and will install to if needed

Thanks Craig, I have spoken to our OH&S advisor about it and as long as it has no greater than 240mm tread and no greater than 190mm rise I will be within specs, after that they can not be more than 850mm wide to use 240x45 Hard wood for both the stringers and treads, I dont need to put in risers.

They must also be bolted together not nailed and it is recomended that I sink the treads into the stringers no more than 10mm.

That is all the info he was able to give me on the subject but I think that covers it, he got the info from another advisor who had been a chippy.

As far as covering my A*s goes, as long as our advisor thinks it's safe and there is a hazard risk assesment done, Im covered as I have followed the correct proceedure at the time of the build.

OH&S is painful at times but if some numbat does fall off it I will be glad I have been through all of it so he cant sue me.

These are based on the stairs which I am building, if your building your own, go through the procedure your self to cover you as specs change all the time from day to day so check your self.

By the way im still trying to get prices second hand on steel steps, so far around $1000 to $2000.

Will I get out of building timber ones cheaper?
