I pulled this off ExplorOz
The much talked about permit system for areas on/near the Canning Stock Route (CSR) is not yet in place - so what does this mean?
Since Native Title ownserhip has been granted to the Martu people and they have identified and published which sites they wish to restrict access to, travellers for the 2007 seasons must adhere to the regulations as follows:
NO ACCESS to the following areas (NO PERMIT is available): Mt Shoesmith, Wandurba Rockhole, Biligilli Well, Jenkins Track, Percival Lakes, Callowa Track, Savoury Creek Track, Killagurra Spring, Biella Spring, Calvert Ranges, and the track to the Calvert Ranges and beyond.
The following areas are accessible but ONLY WITH A PERMIT: Sunday Well, Durba Springs, Diebel Springs, Onegunyah Rockhole, Western section of Lake Disappointment, the Track to McFadden Ranges, Helen Hill, Turtle Hill, Slate Range, Ural Native Well, Libral, Lake George, Lake Winifred. Currently, there is no permit system in place, so none of the above areas are accessible yet. This means none of the above listed sites can be visited by tourists planning trips this season.
AND
The permit scheme is being test run and will be operational as soon as our website host makes a few editing changes. Our online purchasing facility has been established and test run, so we are very close to operating - a day or two to get it right should be about it. You can visit our website at
http://www.anfwdc.asn.au and click on the access update in the right hand margin for some recently updated information.
In answer to you specific question regaarding how to apply and cost, there will be information about the permit and a large red button on the website to start the process.
Every driver must carry the permit package in their vevhicle. There are two classes of permit covering individuals & commercial tour operators. The permits are for tourism purposes only. Any other access, e.g for volunteer work on the wells must be arranged by specific arrangement.
An individual permit covers driver, co driver/passenger(s) and your vehicle. The cost is to be $50, and will be issued for one month from the date you nominate on the form. You can apply and purchase online through our Westpac Web Advantage system, and once the transaction is approved, the package can be downloaded by you. The file is large, consisting of the permit, conditions and an information package. It is around 40 A4 pages and is being checked as a final edit at the moment. If you wish you can elect to have your package printed by us and mailed to your nominated home address for an additional $15 anywhere in Australia. Permit holders will be very welcome to call in for fuel and other purchases at the commuinities along the route, as advised in the information package. I hope this helps and have a great trip. One final reminder - visit our website for the update.

Yep more cost, paperwork, red tape and restrictions as to where we can and can not go.
I reckon we should introduce fees when they want to come into town.
I am not racist at all, but lets be fair. Australia for all Australians, not just minorities. I do not totally disagree with permits to keep an eye on who is where, but costs and restrictions are garbage. Most of the aboriginals in remote areas are great people and love a chat. Have mistakenly ended up in a few places we should not have been and had no trouble with our indigenous brothers. The white administrators are a different kettle of fish.
Tis a sad sad world we live in now.

It is just like the Simson Desert Park Pass pay your money for what. Look I loved doing the Simson, but what is the pass for there is no services. It just appears an opportunity to extract money from people who have already spend a lot to be able to prepare themselves for remote area travel. What I feel needs to be done is the departments that excise these fees should be made accountable and disclose what the fees are spent on. That would make them S#!t,![]()

Although this is a big restriction and many may be upset about it, it's not all that much of a surprise that they have done this.
One of the major reasons was the damage the "knob head brigade tourists" were doing to the area, aspecially the areas that the track passed through existing native land, it's those areas that are now off limits and others.
It was only a matter of time that this would happen.
It's not only this area that will be closed there are many more to come.
NPWS NSW have gazetted Mt Walker for closure which was part of Lydsdale SF, i think it will be closed by the end of May, there are 2 ways into this area, one is already locked the entry from Lydsdale is to be gated as well.
In fact the entire EAST coast of VIC, NSW and QLD east of the Great dividing range is gazzetted for closure, by PWS of all states and SF the government and the greens.

** RANT WARNING ON **
Gaarn. Go read some real history, the lot of you.
When we (meaning Europeans) came to this country, somebody else owned it, every last blade of grass. We took it off them by force, and the courts of this land have upheld that we did that LEGALLY, which is an interesting approach to take when you think about it.
Where we didn't take over their rights to THEIR land, they still own it. Yep, just like you OWN your back yard and can charge anyone whatever you want for the use of it. Or can have them charged with trespass.
Anything the Government does to grant permission for something overrides the traditional land ownership. Granting permission for geological surveying, road building or whatever, over-rides Native Title. So I would think the CSR would be hands-off when it comes to Native Title. But areas NOT part of the original survey, or now on land held in private hands under European-style ownership (whatever the colour of those hands) would be quite different to leasehold Crown lands.
Everybody is a minority of 1. I'm only renting the house I have, but I'll be buggered if you lot could all just take over whenever you want, just because there's more of you. How many people are involved in owning land, or denying use of certain areas, is irrelevent.
Get some proper education. Find about the HUNDREDS of separate nations, with defined boundaries, that existed in the Country before Europeans arrived. Learn about how land was owned by those nations but held in common for all citizens. THEN you can come back and try to argue about whether some bit of land should be held for "all Australians."
