To all you mine workers

Every industry thinks they are unique and hard to work in and wont recruit unless you had industry experience

My speciality is Human Resources, Employee Relations l have a degree in Commerce and another degree in Law, l have worked for Unions, EMployer Organisations and Private COmpanies and myself, l have 26 years experience since graduating.

I have worked in Health Industry, Transport Industry, Forestry, Manufacturing, Chemicals, Hospitality etc and now Construction.

Yet l still get you dont have the experience we are seeking

In my view its all about people and communication and it doesnt matter where l have worked all the issues that need resolving are always the same, the boss doesn't listen, the workers wont do as their told and no one gets paid what they are really worth.

As far as lm concerned anyone can do any job they are trained to do, you merely have to determine are they competent to do the job and willing to do it.

A tradesman does trades work according to his muster, without supervision. I.E. a fitter- machinist should be able to do any work of a fitter whether it is in a mine or a laundry. A labourer, trades assistant, or process worker works under direction and supervision. For a tradesman, unless the job is highly specialised, all jobs are the same, witihin his training. Experience means he MAY be able to do the job quicker or better than a tradesman inexperienced at that process for a short time.
As an old Fitter-Machinist first Class, I object to "multi-skilling". If a fitter or boilermaker needed a five year apprenticeship to do his job, then a "multi-skilled" worker needed a bloody sight more. "Fitter-Welders" are an example. I never came across a tradesman fitter who could weld like a good boilie, in fact, most of us never wanted to do any more than basic welding if we had to. In big shops or yards, quite rightly, we were never allowed to weld.

I'm a 2nd year mining engineer at UNSW and all i can say get into it, the industry will allow you to travel this place and get out into the outdoors for some damn good pay! and some of the advantages of it is while your working the fact ur not paying rent or basically any living expencies (maybe 20 per week for rent) you save a hell of alot of what you earn.. only enemy is the tax collector.

What these guys are saying about experience is true in some respect, but i know that mine sites often go through changes and need to do lots of hiring, keep your ear to the ground, get some industry contacts and youll be set.

Newmont have just started recruiting for the Boddington Gold mine.
We are having a ****fight with the shire over our ****poor wages at the moment.
I can see most of us sliping an application in!!!!
Im really peed off with my wages,they put me up to level5 (WA local gov) as im driving the grader now.I should have already been level5 as Im a designated semi driver,they asked me to do it and paid for the liscence!!!
I get $17.08 per hour!!!!!,going up to the grader from driving a 6 wheeler truck is worth a WHOLE $11 per week before tax!!!!!
NO GUESSING,THERE IS A LOT MORE TO DRIVING A GRADER THAN A TRUCK!!!!!!! And you can get truck drivers anywhere,try and find grader drivers!!!!
I hear you Craig,a start at Boddington may be easier in the short term.

we are finding in this area that the mines are more interested in taking young guys straight out of school and training them themselves.No experience required.17 year olds earning 90k a year,a few local older operators have left the council, but they seem to all get jobs with contractors, not the mine itself.Hence, as contracts are won and lost, they constantly have to relocate.

workers are actually being layed off in the Hunter Valley as there are massive hold ups at the Newcastle port coal loader.
A lot of the mine blokes here are employed through labour hire companies and are technically casuals and work twelve hour rolling shifts but gee, the pay is good. I wouldn't mind getting in on the lurk for a couple of years, beats working for youself for a pittance.
