A YOB has been awarded £42,500 after being bitten by a police dog while taking part in a KNIFE FIGHT.
The compensation and costs, thought to be Britain’s largest payout for a dog bite, were condemned by the Police Federation as “perverse”.
Dog Bruce and handler PC Pete Tattum were breaking up a street fight involving youths with knives and bottles in Brighton in 2002.
The thug, then aged 14, fled but Bruce caught him and bit off part of an ear.
Sussex Police put Alsatian Bruce down.
But animal lovers and police forces round the world argued that he should have been retired instead. PC Tattum had even offered to keep him as a pet.
Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Yeo described the dog as just a “piece of equipment” which should be disposed of if it goes wrong.
Mr Yeo, now a regional director with the RSPCA, later apologised for his “insensitive” words.
The award was agreed out of court and chairman of the Sussex Police Federation, Inspector Brian Stockham, said: “It seems dreadful we are paying out such sums of public money to someone involved in a street disturbance.”
The force declined to comment.

I've looked at a couple of shows on TV that were about training police dogs and such.A YOB has been awarded £42,500 after being bitten by a police dog while taking part in a KNIFE FIGHT.

Never seen one that trained them to take off an ear, though.
Must be why all of the dogs trainers go around wearing hats.
Cheers
Simon
As it was a Police Dog it probably happened when he heard his Handler say, " 'ullo, 'ullo, 'ullo, what's going on ear then? Right Boss, your wish is my command". CHOMP!![]()
